I'd happily buy your upper as well as the Khimera...I already have a Sabre upper.
I think it's great to have options, even if both of them turn out to be excellent uppers there's always something that sets one apart from the other and makes it fun to shoot.
That's why I bought a tungsten bolt and a factory M11 upper as opposed to simply being happy with my Lage uppers.
Surely I'm not the only one who thinks there's room for two options even with a limited customer base.
I wish you luck and above all the time to get your upper on the market soon...like tomorrow LOL

I echo every single part of this post. :thumbs_up

OK, I'll be the guy that brings this thread back to the top:
Is there any life in the Khimera concept? Is it dead? Was it stillborn?
(Hoping somebody in the know will pipe up with a progress report)

We're waiting on someone with both extensive engineering skills and shop experience to use their self-funded equipment and materials to take on a low-profit margin, easily-ATF-rejectable project with no realistic hope of recuperating the significant front-end costs from a relatively tiny niche market just because we think its cool.

So do we have any retired independently-wealthy engineers with private machine shops and open schedules who want to be everybody's hero and tackle this project?

I've got a 3d printer for rapid prototyping but then again, so does Lage and some others on this forum.

If I knew this project wasn't planning to be worked on I'd ask for the .stl file(s) and continue but I'm sure it's on the back/front burner off and on somewhere.... right?

So it's at a standstill for now? Are you guys soliciting help at all or just waiting for someone to volunteer?

Not that I am the guy, but does anybody in the "know" have an estimate of the business model for such a project:
1. Total universe of registered M11/9s (assuming that is first targeted market)
2. Estimated Engineering/Design hours to get project to prototype
3. Chances of marketplace acceptable product
4. Chances of ATF approval
5. Estimated cost of production ready product
6. Estimated "take rate" of registered M11/9 users

Maybe this is where I invest my life savings in order to become rich:)?

^ I design prototypes as a hobby. Zero cost as its not time away from making a living.

That is partially how this has to be approached. Putting every potential hour on a time sheet kills the business argument.

The answer to Question 1. is known: 17,000, give or take a handful.

Updates are kept in post 2. It's Marty's project and he's still in transition at this time is the latest news.

Hello All,

It's still on my radar. I'm currently only 999 things behind on my list of 1,000 things to do before I get back to this. But I will. It's just going to take some time. ZMAG-S mags are a priority currently.

Thank you for your understanding,
Marty

As the satisfied owner of two 50 round ZMags for my M11/9 I consider this a valid reason. Just be sure the Khimera comes out as reliable and functional as the Zmags :)

It seems as if the current design issue is around the striker assembly. I think that Richard Lage once created a closed bolt MAX31 for use in competitions. I wonder if his close bolt striker concept could work in the AR15 upper.

What do you say Richard? Is the concept transferable to the AR platform?
