The 40rd mags were made by CMP in Atlanta. They were the brainchild of Wayne Daniel. When the open bolt semis were approved for sale by ATF, there was a sudden need for magazines. There were nowhere enough mags in 9mm or .380 to satisfy the perceived aftermarket demand. (The decision was made to ship guns with only one mag). Instead of just buying more cheap surplus Grease gun mags and modding them to fit, CMP produced a prototype 40rd mag. This was an extra 10rds and made for great marketing..."the ultimate in Ingram firepower" was the slogan. After the demise of RPB in 1982, they vanished.
While nowhere as robust as the GG mags, they were reliable. In the old days I shot thousands of rounds through them with no failures to remember. They were pricey, in the $30-40 price range. GG mags could be had for $5-7.
I still have 15 or 20 still in the plastic wrap that I'll probably never use. In a semi gun they were the bomb. But there's something cool about shooting a real FA MAC with the original GG mags that I like. But hey, I'm one of those MACaholic purists that sees any aftermarket mod to an Ingram as gross. LOL
