Of just the two you listed, M16A1.

The longer gas dwell, longer barrel, longer sight radius of the A1 rules between the two.

Ditto on the A1/fixed stock. Very light too.

Using todays modern math (everyone is a winner, no loosers....all answers are correct) I submit this manipulation of numbers for my submittion...

Given M16 and M4

Using the M

Using the 6 from M16 and the 4 from M4
6-4=2

Now we have M2

Using the 4 from M4 we have M24

6 in the M16 plus 4 from the M4 6+4=10

10 - the 1 from M16 =9

The answer is

OK, I'll vote 14.5" M4.

Handier than the 20" barrel, and not that much velocity loss. More of an "all around" gun.

Also far as I've been able to collect data, very reliable.

M4. Lighter, more manuverable, and doesnt stick out as far so zombies can grab it, take it from you, then eat your brains.

ZOMBIES ARE COMING!!!!

I vote M16.
Mainly because I put a 20" upper on my AR.
Never know the extra 4" may come in handy.
But, if you dont have either one, there is no wrong choice.:thinking

Uhh, aint both of them simply full auto AR-15 ??

Everything function the same, other than the marks on the lower.

I didn't see M9 listed. That's all they gave me when they sent me to Iraq...lol

Now they are deploying us with M4s, but I was lucky/unlucky depending on how you look at it. I enjoyed the M9 for the convenience as everyday chores like going to eat and so forth were simplified since I didn't have to worry about holding a rifle while I ate.

I would rather have the M4 over the M16 though. Easier to carry and shoot, especially when you're wearing a FLAK.

Yes but M16s have a 20'' barrel while M4s have a 14.5'' barrel.

I would take the M16A1 in a real fight anyday. The extra velocity from the 5.5'' makes a difference.

I'm curious that most people mention the "A1" even though it was not specified in the pole or the original post. I like the A1 as well, compared to the A2.

I have only passing experience with collapsible stock M16s such as M4. In full auto the long rifles have stocks too long to keep good sight picture if you need to shoot offhand with a squared stance. Plus the newer guns have rails for sight options which can make that business even easier in some circumstances.

But for general purposes, it's A1 for me, too.

I used to have an A1, now I have a couple of flat tops and A2 uppers.

Normally, I ignore having the elevation wheel on the back of the A2 since to me it's unnecessary for the type of shooting that I do.

Thanx!

At more than 2700 FPS, I doubt the 100-200 FPS difference between 14.5" and 20" would make much of a difference.

the difference in FPS doesn't make much of a distance at "up close and personal" ranges but may become a factor at extended ranges...the more FPS the more likely the bullet is going to yaw and break into fragments..which causes more damage to the threat....
