I was holding off posting anything, but I figured I would share my project. With the SABRE engineering drawings being made available and me totally missing the boat on these, I figured I would make my own from scratch. Let me preface that I'm doing this only for myself as a fun DIY project.

I started with the AK M11/9 drawings and converted them over to SolidWorks model files. I have a friend with a nice HAAS CNC mill, so I enlisted his help with the programming.

The AK files were close, but required a few modifications in the magazine area to get the proper magazine fitment. Mods were made and the upper was machined out of Delrin, then 7075.

The mag catches and lower mount block were 3D printed in stainless.

The magazine presentation seems correct - as mags fit nicely and the bolt is able to strip cartridges properly without contacting the feed lips.

I am building this as a DI gas system, so I'm making a modified version of the barrel block that has provision for the gas tube. I should be done with this in the next couple weeks.

As I make each part, I'll update this thread. Again I'm doing this just for fun only.

Conclusions - despite what some say about this upper, they did a great job. It's a clever design. I like it. I feel like you can't fully appreciate the design until you redraw the whole thing and machine it from scratch haha.

So awesome! I did not know the files were available? DI makes sense as it seemed like there were problems with the piston system, or at least the gas block iirc.

Yeah for me it was was the easier path since it eliminated the whole custom gas system. DI is proven to work and is the least expensive route for sure.

Nice, resurrected from the dead. A friend with a HAAS CNC mill is a friend indeed.

I will be following this closely as I can see machining one for myself....besides I found a couple cases of 7.62x39 I forgot I had.

:beerGREAT JOB...KUDOS... and all the best praises...
I have always thought the SABRE design was STILL the way to go... Already ATF approved, Comparatively easy to make.
It just needed to go on a BIG DIET, reduce the volume of the split sides. Go with better screws little bigger to hold the shells together. Better pin placement. Gas block work.
In reality it still needs to be a split design to be totally serviced, But a few minor changes would make it a half hour bench job. Several wedge recessed grooves.
In reality it's not much different than a Max-31, Yeah the BCG needs some skill.
I'm Sorry... This is EXCITING.
But I knew SOMEDAY I would see these photos posted on here by SOMEBODY...
Oh yeah, gonna be a lot following this...

Awesome! Any chance you could share the final 3d files with all your changes?

Thanks guys! It seemed like fun project to tackle as it's approved and 'doable'. I was uniquely positioned to do it given my proximity to a CNC mill and a friend more capable than I in solid works. It would probably be prohibitively expensive if I had to pay someone to do it. My intention is to make it largely as is (as you can see) as a means to get a handle on it's function and what could be improved. I can share a list of what I had to mod to make it work once I get there (get it running). I'm still slowly going through it. I'm hoping to have this running in the next couple months depending on my time.

Hey man that looks great! You're really moving along with this project, nice work.

BTW, Gabby says to tell you how much she is enjoying her Suomi SBR!

Didn't I warn you over on WG that everyone here would want one!

Glad ya brought the post/thread over here.

Rich

PS: for those that don't have the files there is a link/trhead here to when AA released these to the public.
they are also inthe pattern room on WG and I DL'd them all just to have like others did I'm sure.
