Hey there everyone! I'm got my new upper recently and I can't get USGI mags new and old to actually lock in the magwell even with hitting from the bottom, bolt open or closed. Is this a normal issue or do I need to reach out to lage to have it fixed. Wanted to know from the community.

I have the 10 version. Is the "Troy" an aftermarket addition to the upper? If so, does it work with the one it came with?

How much spring tension is on the mag catch? The standard is tighten the mag release button on the right side as much as you can. Then push the button in such that the mag catch clears the magwell. The catch should be turned clockwise three rotations.

If that doesn't help, you could do what is instructed above, only in reverse and remove the mag catch and see if the mag lines up with the mag catch slot.

Troy is the OEM ambi magazine release the lage upper comes with. The upper does not lock with USGI mags immediately after opening the package. No modifications whatsoever.

Reach out to Lage. Sure.
It might be the tension.

Do you know how to screw in or out the mag catch?

I had that problem on one of my two 556 uppers, finally unscrewed the catch and measured the length, not depth, but length and compared it to a colt one. It was a few thousands longer than colt stock one. Touched it to belt sander, but I forget which end, re installed, problem solved.

I had the same problem with Okay aluminum mags and was about to complain but realized it worked with all types of pmag, both 30 and drum and called it a day.

i just received my Max-11/15 upper and mine is doing the same thing. Mags will not lock when bolt is forward but lock just fine with bolt retracted. The only way I can insert magazine on a closed bolt is to push up the mag then press on the long bar and it will pop and then lock up. I tried slapping it in and jiggling the mag but it will not lock unless I press down on the long bar. It happens with all of my mags. I will compare the troy mag catch to the factory mag catch on my m4. I also plan to install the M4 mag catch in Max-11/15 upper to see if it will lock when bolt is forward. This is kind of frustrating when you pay that much for the upper and it to have issues but Lage has awesome customer service and I will reach out to him if the M4 mag catch doesnt work either.

Harley-mac:

Are you using polymer or metal magazines? Make sure you are not loading 31 rounds into the magazine. A lot of magazines will accept 31 rounds, but this does not allow the top round to compress into the magazine to allow the mag' to lock in with the bolt closed.

For people who are having problems with metal magazines not locking in, there are some metal magazines that do not have the rear of the mag catch notch fully cut to the rear. This causes the TROY mag' catch to not fit into the notch.

The mag' catch can be modified to work with these mag's with a simple modification by cutting an angle into the rear edge of the catch. The mag' catch is hardened, so the easiest way is with a Dremel cut-off disc. The angle should be about 45 degrees.

Before: After:

A lot of aftermarket mag' catches have this angle, for some reason the TROY catches do not. We use the TROY mag' catch, because we found it to be the easiest to use when grabbing the mag' with your left hand to pull it out.

If you would like to, you can send the mag' catch back and we will modify it for free.

Here is what I found out with my upper. Looks like the same as Richards post. Mine was not locking with all types of mags with 29-30 rounds. What I first done was push out mag release and mark where the catch hump was. (pic3) I removed catch and inserted the mag to see where the mag catch opening was in relation to the ambi mag catch hump(pic1). I then removed the material until all mags now lock. Same as Richards. Hope this helps

Thanks for the offer and the awesome customer service Richard but I fixed mine and it seemed pretty easy to do with a small file. I love this upper it is really amazing, and it was well worth the money. Please disregard my email to you. I emailed you before I fixed it. :)

I recently purchased a Max10/15. Has the same mag catch, I pulled it off and put a stock GI catch on. Yes no ambi now, but the Troy ambi catch was slightly undersized from a stock mag catch (not by much). I did this to try and remove some of the magazine slop. But IMO the machining for the mag catch slot is over-sized ( there is a shit load of play ) enough that I want to test fire while resting on the magazine. I am willing to bet the feedlips will catch the bolt face. This is with a GI metal magazine (IE... COLT, Okay, Brownells) Have not tried my HK stainless yet. I am sure the magpul and polymer mags have a tighter fit, but I dont use those magazines after seeing them fail under heavy use.
