HI All

Never built one before but someone offered me a MAK-91 National Match Norinco kit..everything but the receiver looks to be in VERY good shape so I was thinking of building one or having it built. Question one would be, do I need all those 922 parts if I use the original thumbhole stock? Question two is where would I find a Milled Receiver to build this up on?

Thanks

Apologize for the clueless nature of my request!

There are a few places to get them....most are pretty decent quality (some better than the originals):

Firingline:
http://www.firinglineoklahoma.com/akreceivers.html

CNC Warrior:
http://www.cncwarrior.com/?s=milled+receiver&catalog=true

You also might want to check with Arsenal...they used to sell milled receivers, though I don't know if they still sell them by themselves....

As to your other question: YES, you must ALWAYS follow the 922r guidelines when building any import, no matter what the configuration.

Good luck...

Unless you are getting this parts kit for free, or are building it yourself, you are probably throwing good money after bad. By the time you factor in a receiver, as well as a having a builder assemble the gun, you will have more invested in the thing then it would probably be worth. This is a value call on your part, but I think that if the kit costs much more than 100 or 150, you'll be losing.

I disagree on needing 922r parts in this instance. As I understand it, 922r is only an issue when you have two or more "evil" features. If the OP is building the gun exactly as it would've been imported (thumbhole stock, non-threaded muzzle, no bayonet lug, etc) then it only has a single "evil" feature, the ability to take high cap mags. The gun would be importable as is, and would be buildable as it, as 922r would not apply.

I don't work for the ATF, nor am I a lawyer, but this seems to be how the law is worded. Thoughts?

Thanks for the info so far!

I agree with the value thing! It is for free (the kit)..so figured it might be worth it but again...no clue how hard it is to build or how much to get a decent builder to do it...

Well, sounds like you've solved the big problem, cost. I believe that CNC warrior builds a Chinese specific receiver, and will time the receiver for you if you send in your barrel. I recall the NHM having a screw in barrel, ignore that last bit if yours doesn't.

If it were me, I would built a 922r compliant RPK-47 clone. Get a US made receiver, fire control group, and stock parts, and throw it all together. You'd have a nice milled gun, with a heavy chrome barrel and a bipod, and it would probably last a lifetime. Thread the barrel and it would be golden...

The NHM-91s, as imported, were a giant buzzkill to me. The soft wood stocks tended to loosen and crack with repeated use, and the rear of the receiver was angle cut, making it impossible to use a standard AK style stock. Ironwood designs made a wood set, but it was too spendy for my wallet at the time. Let us know what you decide...

Excellent

Thanks!

I told the guy sure wtf I'll take it and do my best with it! I will def check out those sites and that guy too, see what the best way to go is...I kind of like the traditional look so might just keep it the same and get a milled receiver and put it back together making the parts are all cool with ATF of course :)

After the new year when I get a chance to check it will update and let you guys know how she is coming along...should go well with my others...
