Has anyone done any comparison or testing of different muzzle devices for MACs? I am not sold on the idea of ever shooting one suppressed so am looking at options beyond a bare muzzle of birdcage. Thanks.

I have plenty of cans. I don’t want the extra weight, length or cyclic rate. A lot of the same reasons I have a Suomi upper I won’t use.

Another barrel extension, with grip... no longer in production, but they come up for sale in the used market from time to time:

I have one that came with one of my M11/9 guns... I've tried it, and it's comfortable enough.

Like others, I definitely prefer a suppressor on the end of an otherwise factory-naked M11.

Anything you do will add weight and possibly affect cyclical rate. Anything you do will affect OAL.

What Mac? What caliber?

I don't see the point of really any muzzle device on pistol caliber anything other than a suppressor. Not enough gas to be effective. Not enough powder to do much for a flash. Not like we are at war with these so trying to "hide" the minimal muzzle flash is unnecessary.

I double threaded my barrel on my M10/45 with 5/8-24 threads to direct thread a can. Doing somwth similar will allow more options.

If you want a lower ROF that "Suomi" upper from Lage is the ticket.

What are the prices of those front grips?

I appreciate everyone’s replies and also how passionately everyone thinks it is a sin to not suppress something if you can. I have an octane 9, an SWD HE and a form 1 can I would rate at .338 win mag - that isn’t the point. I don’t WANT to suppress it and I don’t WANT to use the Suomi upper I have - I was hoping someone had tried a few different brakes, comps and flash hiders and had some insight.

Also, for the record, the MK 2 has a slower ROF that the Suomi upper and comps DO work on pistol calibers - otherwise they wouldn’t be on competition pistols. Even the birdcages Richard ships on his uppers are closed on the bottom to mitigate dust when shooting prone and unless newton was wrong, if the gas is going mostly up, the muzzle is going down at least some amount more than a bare muzzle.

This was incorrect. The Lage uppers ship with an A1 (see below).

The Mac cans are so large they don't affect the ROF significantly.

The 10 and 11 we're designed with the suppressor in mind. Running them without one is... suboptimal.

This is assuming you've got a 1/2x28 thread going, but this seems to combine the best of both worlds. Suppressor quick attach but also some muzzle brake aspects:

I have run an Angstadt (sp?) 3lug flash hider with two different cans using the silencerco flush 3 lug adapter and the ports seem to get the adapter stuck pretty easily on my AKV. Have you experienced this?

I use a traditional Carlson Compensator for 9mm. It removes most of the muzzle rise and replaces it with a lessor amount of muzzle dip. At one time, Richard Lage posted a slow motion video of that comp along with a comparison video of the standard flash hider showing its effectiveness. More recently when I had spoken to Richard, he had gone back to a regular flash hider. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. Anyway, another Carlson comp (the first one shown in this thread) seems to show very little muzzle rise):

We have always shipped our uppers with A1 style, open all the way around flash suppressors. The A2 will actually push the barrel down a little when firing, opening up group size.

Thanks Richard. I must be getting my uppers confused and have a lot of muzzle devices on the work bench at the moment. I think I took an A2 off to install a QD mount and got us mixed up a bit.

I suppose it makes sense that at a certain speed the gun would recoil down. I see a similar thing with a suppressed 9mm handgun - 4 rounds a second, everything is ok. At 7/8 rounds a second things tend to trend down.

The gas plume from a subgun muzzle device causes a mirage effect that disturbs a shooters image and has a deleterious effect on aiming. It was one of the reasons why the U.S. military took the Cutts compensator off the Thompson submachine gun when the M1 Thompson was introduced. The mirage effect may be less noticeable with rifles, though silencers on rifles are often covered to provide mirage reduction as a larger amount of gas is generated than from pistol ammo.

FWIW, I took off the A1 flash hider off my M11-380 9mm upper, and installed a thread protector.

MHO, YMMV, etc.

Where would one go to find the current Carlson Comp product line? My search skills are apparently weak.
