New AC556 with Ciener kit...need help w/extended burst and suppressor

I recently installed Ciener’s 22LR conversion kit that I bought new a couple of months ago. Took it out to the range today.

Ran like a top (after I oiled the crap out of it) with most high velocity ammo running at around 1,200 fps. Mags all did what they’re supposed to. The only issue with hi-vel ammo was that in burst mode it fired more than three rounds. I did not get a count on this extended burst but wonder if any one else has had this experience?

In trying to use a suppressor, CCI Standard Velocity (which runs at 1,070 fps) will eject the spent case, but the bolt is not coming back far enough to catch a fresh round and chamber it. I have a Spectre 22 from SilencerCo and want to run ammo just making subsonic.

Has anyone on this forum solved this suppressor problem before? I plan to contact Ciener and see what they say. Perhaps he has a lowered powered recoil spring.

Thanks for any help!

Lou

First, don’t bother calling J. Ciener. You have a better chance of winning the powerball than actually getting a call back. You could buy a replacement spring from him (if he happens to have them in stock, because if he doesn’t he will just send back your money order or check), that way you have a spare. Then take your original and clip a round off at a time to decrease spring pressure. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for responding. Will try that while waiting to see if anyone has already been down this path and figured it out.

You might try Gemtech subsonic ammunition? It is made by CCI and uses a 42gr bullet. It runs subsonic in my guns and will cycle the action fully on everything I have tried it in. Of course your results may vary as no .22 are alike in my experience.

some things I found when I played with my kit years ago
albeit....in semi auto form, but think you might get something from it;
gun: 13" sidefolder SBR (for barrel length purposes)
suppressor: swr spectre

1: I had runaways occasionally with high velocity ammo paired with a suppressor. I thought maybe it had to do with the additional back pressure of the higher velocity round coupled with the back pressure of a can on it "over running" the trigger (or cam in your case?)
2: when my kit was installed, I noticed a "bump" (for lack of a better word) in the receiver where the bolt ran and hung the bolt up some (though didnt seem to be an issue in full power ammo/bolt). I carefully ground down the bump smooth to the rest of the receiver and never had a problem after that. maybe the reverse of #1 is true when you're running lower power ammo, in that it doesnt have enough back pressure to eject fully because the bolt is rubbing on the bump, robbing energy.
3: agreed....you'll never hear from JAC. but some years ago, you could buy spare springs from lakeside machine? think that's who had them. but cutting a coil at a time is good info for reducing the power of your existing spring. but maybe hurts the performance of CCI standards?
4: be on the lookout for old blackdog mags. pretty sure they dont make them any more, but they were far superior to ciener mags. troll gunbroker for them.

again, I am not lucky enough to have an AC, but spent some time playing with my 22 kit years ago.

Thanks for the ideas. I’ve read a lot of cautionary comments regarding John Ciener. I can only relate my experience. The kit and extra magazines I ordered were delivered within the timeframe I expected (I wrote a personal check which adds to the time). The kit was well packaged in a nice case made for it.

Installation was a little frustrating but I chalk that up to my lack of skills putting parts together. It took me a fair amount of time to properly install the operating rod in the rail over the bolt. Now it seems too simple, but for whatever reason it had me stumped. If I pull the operating rod back fully it can come back off the bolt, but it’s not been a problem in operation.

I’ll order some extra springs from John. We’ll see if he continues to provide good service.

Hi LouLittle,

Awhile back Winchester was loading their M-22 line with 45gr LRN copper plated subsonic.

https://www.targetsportsusa.com/win...0-grain-bplrn-800-rds-s22lrtsups-p-58748.aspx

for example. I was able to get them for about 9 cents/each at my local sporting goods store in 100 round boxes.

Anyway, these had quite a bit of push on the bolt of my F/A 22's and were dead quiet. I'd guess these might make your gun run.

Academy has 42 gr Winchester M-22 subsonics but they are hollowpoints. That might cause problems.

I'd try to score a few hundred of the 45gr RN subsonics and see how they work for you.

Just a thought,

K2

Thanks, K2. Will try both. Also will tinker with the recoil spring when I get a couple extra.
