Howdy,

I just joined yalls forum because of the information on R series and galils rifles. Iv been collecting R5 parts for a few years, I tried to upload a picture but the file was too big

Is there any way to find the expired pictures on the R4 information thread?

I tried, looks like the pictures went down before the forum got saved in the wayback machine. Unfortunate

Heres my kit so far, if anyone’s interested in seeing it. Still got a long way to go. Barrel is US but the rest is SA

Good job! You certainly have the original R5 gas tube! Those are really hard to find. Also correct rear handguard retainer. Besides receiver , trigger set and handguard you look like you are almost there👍

Are you buying your parts directly from SA? I know that the later made parts are made with a painted finish looks like dull metallic black which could be the magnese parkerizing. Most of the parts I collected had been worn and was hard to tell what finish it was. My R5 gas tube was painted green when I received it in the mail no matter what I loved it! Jeff Miller refinished it for me. Is your SA bolt the one with the free float fire pin and rubber gasket?

Iv been buying parts off the AKfiles marketplace, a few retailers here in the US who import SA parts, and gunbroker. Not from a business in SA but from forum member who lives there yes.

I wonder what that paint is? Itd be neat if it were something commercially available. No its the spring loaded kind, not the rubber gasket. I think the forgotten weapons video said they had trouble with the rubber gasket hardening up, so i wanted a spring loaded one

AK files is a good place to source parts. SA sales can be tricky and expensive. My first order from SA took 3 months to reach me and SA charges a VAT tax which is almost as much as the part.
I don’t know what the green paint code was on my R5 gas tube, but it definitely looks like it did duty in Rhodesia. If you are going for the puke brown color it is called Nutria brown. Jeff Miller has that color down if you call him

The bolt and free float firing pin are what was standard on Galil’s. SA used that gasket. You should be good with spring loaded bolt and firing pin you bought.

Are you going to add the rubber stop for the bolt carrier that goes on the stock knuckle?

Dang at three months Id be guessing if it got lost or stolen. An rhodesian painted R5, imagine that. Iv seen a couple of NOS green top covers from gekishibu, I wonder if they're from the same place?

I saw the nutria brown ones but im probably gonna stick with black, I like the classic look. The bolt has an oval P mark, so I know its SA, perfect for my build. And yes I have a buffer, I forgot to include it in the picture. Does the buffer actually make a difference in recoil?

Yes 3 months😳 I placed an order with member Adipose and we both thought we got ripped off. We just did not take into account that our parts made it on a shipping container on the slow boat to the USA. Then one day it showed up. Very surprised.

Ahh you recognize the oval P mark. You studied the SA R Series rifle thread👌

You will be surprised to know that I was able to get that green R5 gas tube from APEX gun parts in CO. It was a total fluke man!

The buffer does not really reduce the recoil on the R5 since the Galil (and copies) are so heavy they naturally reduce the felt recoil. The buffer is designed to reduce the violence of impact against the bolt carrier and the receiver. It just works 👍

Yes theres a ton of good info on there, even without the pictures.

I did some research and I may have found the answer to your green R5 gas tube:
LM5 data.jpg
This mentions "SCK6" black gun-cote

guncoke specs.jpg
The SCK website lists SCK Nutria brown, green and black. They are all side by side, listed as gun coatings "Perfected in South Africa for military weapons"

green gunkote.jpg
Last, a forum post mentioning dark olive drab R5s. A green R5 clone would certainly be unique

That great info on the paint colors thanks
It sucks that pictures are gone on MRF2’s R-Series thread. I know I personally uploaded a lot of pictures back in the day. When I got into R-Series there was not any information about Galil’s or R rifles. That thread is a great resource.

I got my bolt, and a forward handguard retainer. I see the oval P, lug offset number, last four of the serial number, and the word “AIR” electopenciled in. Anyone know what the “AIR” means?

Also, part of the batch included an R4 handguard, piston, and spare front night sight. Let me know if you’re looking for any of those, wont be needed for my R5 clone!
