was looking at the wikipedia listing for calibers of rifles, and two that caught my eye were the 22-250 and the 300 whisper/fireball, they seemed like good performance rounds, but not as popular as the NATO rounds and rounds that have been around since time began. any of them worth owning in a cheap bolt action rifle to add to the safe for who knows what use?

What really sucks is that i have 2 MP5 clones, chamber in 10mm, and a Glock 20 in 10mm also, and the 10mm ammo is really expensive and hard to find.

Not to mention the mags for the mp5 type HK clone.

The wife said she was buying me a die set up for me to reload my own 10mm ammo, so this Christmas should be a great one, ill have to remind her TO NOT PUT THE POWDER BY THE TREE, BY THE FIREPLACE. LOL....

22-250 ? absolutly. Fast & Flat and affordable to shoot, I reload for my 22 250s. Silencers are not usally availible for these, and a 223 can will likly blow off the end of you gun due to pressure

A 300 Wisp is also a fairlly good round and is offen suppressed.

300 Whisper and 30-221 fireball are the same cartridge, same designer , just renamed 20 years after its introduction

22-250 is wildley popular unless something has changed , I made the 600 club with a std ole rem adl in 22-250 in 1985 , my favorite cal for crow

yes the 22-250 and 243 are both flat shooting factory rounds that are fairly common. I like mine!! I do not have any whisper chambered guns but would not turn one down if I was given one.

22-250 is a popular gun in these parts.

I remember walmart used to carry 40rd boxes of it in 40gr SP for $8... :lol I thought that was expensive at the time.

300 Whisper suppressed would be GREAT for popping groundhogs! Without the CRACK! you could probably get more than one at a time!

Never messed with the whisper rounds, but I can vouch for 22-250. The only downside (if you want to call it that) is short barrel life due to the high velocity round, supposedly. I've never met anyone who actually wore their barrel out, tho.

The .22-250 is a very popular round around here and many factory guns come chambered in them. It is a .22 cal (.224 eg AR-15) round fired out of a .308 case. My buddy favors 50gr Nosler Ballistic tips for his and is a great varmint round. It is all the .223 is plus some.

As for the .300 (whatever you want to call it) does not seem like much of a round to me unless you plan on suppressing it. If you are going to shot a .30 cal bullet at any speed other then subsonic why not use a more common platform...... I have a .300 "Whisper" barrel for my AR being built right now an I have heard them in the past. You get the sound of a suppressed 9mm (subsonic ammo) but MOA accuracy out to 300 yards.

I am getting ready to build a 7mm Whisper and a 300 Whisper on Mini Mauser actions. I hope to have them done by xmas. Of course they will be integrally suppressed.

I have a K98 that I gave to my local gunsmith to build a 22-250 out of. He had a heart attack and has not done any work on my rifle that I know of sense. The guy does good work but I don't know if he is gonna pick it back up.

A T C, I don't know anyone who has shot out a 22-250 but I have seen a 220 swift that had it's barrel shot out. It didn't happen over night but it did happen.

I used to live in E. N.M. we hunted Prairie Dogs for long range shooting. A popular round then('80's)was 25/06. Nice long range flat shooting round.

I don’t know how I missed this thread before. You can’t go wrong with a 300 Whisper and a suppressor. In a bolt gun its Hollywood quiet and is capable of half inch accuracy. Load development can be tricky, but is well worth the effort. I have a reamer available if anyone is interested.

I'd agree with the posts above, .22-250 is far more popular than the .300 whisper. That being said the two rounds are on completely different ends of the spectrum. The .22-250 is an awesome long range performer, that does'nt lend itself well to a suppressed platform, as it's performance is based on it's velocity.
The .300 whisper is not a long range gun, but let me say it is cool as hell to launch 147gr. tracers out of a suppressor. One day I'll have to build one.

my 1st choice for a small bore deer rifle-type would definately have to be a .243.. 22-250 is good also..
