I managed to kill one of the Primary Arms MD-25 red dots on a MAX11/15. The zero kept drifting right to the point it ran out of windage adjustment. I need to send it back.

I like that MD-25 with the larger diameter tube. I think they went to a forever warranty on those too. FYI I think the old 5 year warranty items are now all lifetime retroactively.

I don't have irons or an optic and was wondering what's the point of an optic on a mac. I was really hoping this type of post would eventually come up so I could pick your minds.

Look at post #16 and tell me if you could hit those plates without an optic or irons.

With optics you can.

...I dunno, I'm sure someone who's good at shooting would be able to hit them with irons. I'm not as good of a shooter so yeah, an optic would probably help me personally.

The popularity of these guns has much to do with the modern(and even future) evolution in uppers, mounting rails, stocks, replacement parts etc…enabling shooters to fire more accurately, with more range versatility - while ensuring longevity of their investment. Of course individual proficiency is part of it.

My antique Ingram M10 is capable of surprisingly tight groups at 25 yds semi with railed upper/dot optic and vfg. Short bursts at closer ranges are also more precise, controllable. It would simply be a less enjoyable range gun if I was limited to only the OEM configuration. JMO

I've been avoiding this topic, except for the 'fun' I added, but now I'm going to jump in to add another perspective.

I've tried a bunch of red dots and even scopes on my MGs including my MACs. For the most part I've gotten rid of them and went back to iron sights. BUT, I find that I don't even use the iron sights. When shooting I watch the point of impact and then adjust from there. I admit that I tend to run long bursts or even complete mag dumps but then I'm only shooting them for the pleasure of shooting full auto not to score points or win competitions.

Just an FYI for everybody. Often when I look through a red or green dot on high power outdoors it starts to look like an asterisk, and I have 20/15 vision and as far as I know perfect vision. There is a new reticle from holosun that looks like a "^" and it was perfectly clear even on the highest setting. I am going to be getting one next.

My brother has that same issue with red or green dots appearing to be astericks. He asked me "which hash mark do I aim with, the right or the left?".
He had lasik surgery a few years back and said sometimes things look a little strange.
I will get him a holosun with that upside down V reticle and see if that helps.

I don't know I guess I could have astigmatism but I don't think so? When I use it indoors or at low brightness it's a perfect dot it's just when it's really high that it looks like an asterisk

I was wondering about that as well.... go with a dot or doughnut or ^. I don't own many optics, obviously. I'm going for the doughnut or ^

I have a Holosun on my MAX-10/15 and a Primary Arms RSD on my MAX-10/45mk2. Both have worked great.

I bet you have astigmatism.

Gaujo, is that Vulcan reticle just on the small RMR type holosun sights?

There are some big tube ones too. I tried to do an astigmatism test yesterday because y'all are making me worried. Some red dots have an asterisk effect, some don't, but all do for me at really high brightness. Guess I need to visit an optometrist!

Gaujo,

I read your post more closely and noticed you mentioned the "blooming" or asterisk effect occurs when the sight is turned up to high brightness. I think a lot of people get that and it may not represent astigmatism. How is the dot when you have it more medium level or appropriate for the ambient lighting? I definitely have astigmatism and the higher the brightness the worse the blooming effects.
