Anyone carrying a Blackhawk Serpa holster keep this in mind. They make a duty, tactical and concealment holster in this line all with the same index finger release. For whatever reason the brass had us on the firing line qualifying some of the reserves and constables on a holiday weekend. One of the guys using a Serpa holster couldn’t extract his weapon. The previous volley had been in the prone position and somehow a small rock got into the index finger latch preventing the holster from releasing the weapon. It took us several minutes to get the rock out. This particular holster was a duty holster, but when I got home my two Sepra concealment holsters have the same gap that would allow something to get inside the index finger latch rendering the weapon useless. There are several video "out there" showing Serpa holster jaming up from snow, sand, mud, etc. There also seems to be a real problem in people not using hte correct draw stroke for the holster and then when it will not release, using more force and pressure to get the gun out. When the gun does release, the trigger finger has a tendency to slide into the trigger guard.

I love how so many guys were running around from various gun board to another bragging about how good the serpa holsters are, they are a must, serpa, serpa, serpa...and now they are being avoided because they are not so perfect!.

Serpas are pretty widely reviled. They are responsible (at least in part) for many ND's in classes and this is why many big names in the training industry prohibit there use. The "jamming" is another reason they are a poor choice.

I wore a Serpa thigh holster (Army issued) while deployed last year. It worked pretty well, but I did bang the holster once which compressed the material, and I couldn't draw my M9 easily until I pushed the holster out again.
