I'm seriously considering picking up a 9mm AR and am looking for opinions on the pros/cons/market value of a true "pre-ban" 6450 vs. a new-made 6951.

Cost of the 'collectible' 6450 is going to be $2K+ and it's an A2 upper.

The 6951 is around $1K and is a flattop.

Then there's the 6430.

Thoughts?

If you not dead set on a AR platform I would check out a SUB 2000/9mm Scott. I have always wanted a 9mm rifle so I picked up a sub 2000 and though I’m not a kel tec fan that gun is such a fun reliable and accurate shooter that I was amazed. I got mine in a glock mag and it makes mags cheap especially since magpul started selling glock mags. The gen 2 has a threaded barrel also.

Strange minds think alike. I've contemplated a KelTc; I have a bunch of Glock mags. Lots of Pros to it, mainly economics.

On the other hand Colts will retain and gain value. But at a cost of 2-5X the Keltec.

When the BJ Bill gun ban ended, I picked up my LE marked 6450 for $600. It's my go to home defense weapon. It always goes bang and is accurate out to 100+ yards. It has no recoil, points naturally, is light weight, and has little muzzle blast. It is easy for a child or small framed woman to become proficient with. Ammo is cheap enough for lots of practice. Real Colt magazines aren't cheap, but they work 100% of the time and are all steel. Hey, if it was good enough to be a patrol car weapon, that speaks volumes all by itself.

Murrica, where else.
If you’re not set on a colt I’d suggest building your own that way you have the exact gun you want the way you want it. I did recently and am very happy with it. Many dedicated lowers now so no mag block worries. I went colt pattern and even the cheap asc mags work good after dialing the gun in. My total build cost was less than a grand, and it’s exactly what I wanted, not the closest production model. No wasted parts or money.

I just can't understand why the 9mm models cost more than 556

I have a Colt 6450. I like the carry handle configuration with the open sights and have no desire to mount a scope, red dot or any other doodads. I did add an A1 style triangle fore end, A1 grip and Magpul butt stock . Also removed the plastic brass deflector and replaced the short ejection port cover with a full size one. i have been thinking about replacing the adjustable stock a shorty A1 style

I see you also have an AUG. You need to get a 9mm conversion kit for it and try that out. Shooting a 9mm AUG is a hoot.

Have you checked out the CMMG GUARD in 9mm or possibly in .45 ACP? Rotary delay seems like a big step up from the Colt style blowback system. My brother has been a diehard HK MP5 fan for years for subgun use. He now says that he will be completing with a DIAS in a GUARD 9mm using Glock 18 mags. He says the recoil pulse is as soft or softer than the MP5 with quicker mag changes. I am looking into the .45 version. I like the .45 knock down power for steel and the larger hole made in paper.

I've always liked the look of the DOE 9mm guns.

Wouldn't mind either building a clone or buying a complete DOE upper for my SBR. they just look kool.
Clone that took the uzi mag block would work for me.

The tough part of DOE clone build is the hand guards. I found a set in very good condition M231/DOE hand guards for $250 and thought I got a "deal". There is also the issue of the front sight and hand guard cap. Garrison Manufacturing made some repro DOE front sights and hand guard caps. Maybe post a WTB ad here, subguns, Sturm, and others. It is not going to be cheap. Between the custom work and the parts, I'd think the upper alone would be $1,200 to $1,500 for a clone.

9mm carbines are more money because there are specialty parts and there is also the lower volume. To make 50 it would cost twice as much per unit as making 500. If you make 5,000 the cost is half of the 500 unit cost. Since the 9mm AR market is small, it will cost more money per unit to make.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I ended up buying a M6450 with original box, mags, manual, sling. Pre-94 gun like new, came with 10 mags, mix of colt and C Products.

It wasn't cheap.

The mags for this gun are AWFUL to load. Ordered a MagLula. Really these are the worst / most difficult to load I've ever experienced.

Colt OEM'd the Safariland ML-2 magazine loader to load these magazines. The ML-2 loader works pretty well. I see them offered on GB and eBay at times. Shop around for the best price.

I can understand that.
I was thinking about some of the parts being simpler, no need to drill gas ports, etc

I was thinking that same thing. I have been looking very hard into the guard series specifically as a supressor host. The rotary delay looks very promising compared to direct blowback.

Just bought one on ebay. Did Colt include one in the box or stock them for retail sale?

I never saw one for retail sale. The first time I saw one was at a Law Enforcement weapons dealer in Plymouth Minnesota. I bought it along with two 30 round magazines. The Colt ones are marked with the Colt logo in place of the Safariland logo. I'll find mine and take some pictures of it. I never saw one included in the box with a weapon.
