My grandfather told me a story when I was young of a punt gun that he used to have as a curiosity, a punt gun being a very large bore shotgun used for market hunting usually birds. He said a game warden or someone told him it was illegal and he got rid of it, and I imagine that is what happened to most of them as they were typically owned by humble people who wouldn't have know about DDs or had the money to register one. My understanding is the buttstock was typically lodged in a so designed nook in a sneak boat of some kind as they were huge and not shot from the shoulder. Has anyone seen evidence that any of these made it onto the registry?

I've read about the Punt guns. But never saw one in the wild. Tagging for interest.

Are the AOWs or Destructive Devices under the NFA? I have no idea, but if someone made me guess, I would have said DD.

I get the bore size >0.5"= DD. But that one looks like it's black powder and exempt?

From what I have read they had bore diameters starting at 2" and going up! Yes, muzzle loading as you would need basically cannon shells to load it with if you made a breech loader! They are not illegal to own or even shoot, what was outlawed was their use for hunting.

A punt was a small boat and the rear was secured to fittings on the boat. A big flock of ducks or whatever flew in front of you, one shot would take out dozens of birds.

Or one Graboid...,

You're right that would have been black powder. Well my grandpa got snooked like so many old timers did during those times.

Historically they were black powder which makes them exempt from the NFA. Hence why you can build black powder muzzle loading cannons without them having any real classification. If it loads from the breech it becomes a DD.

JarheadJim had a 4g black powder shotty back in the day. I'm still kicking myself for not buying that when it came up for sale.
