re-assembly of "box of parts"?

Howdy,

Since I am the "gun guy" in my group of friends, I've been asked to re-assemble an Uzi that is currently "just a bunch of parts in a box" by a cousin's friend. I have shot an uzi, but never disassembled or reassembled one.

I have not yet seen the "box of parts" so I'm not sure how disassembled it is. It may be ridiculously easy, or it may be that every pin and spring and whatnot is separate.

Is there a good resource I should look at for reassembly of an Uzi? The AGI video? Or a good book?

I am assuming it's a semi-auto. What should I look for to make sure that is the case? I have no interest in spending time in prison.

Thanks!

What your cousins' friend has is probably a parts set from a de-milled full auto UZI. Virtually none of those parts can be used (as is) to assemble a semi auto UZI. You have to start with a new semi receiver and go from there.

theres lots of info out there, It can be done IF you have the means and experience. IE: welding/machining.

places like weaponsguild have about all the avenues on these covered.

Sorry, I guess I forgot to mention it, but it was a fully assembled gun a few years ago. Then the guy had a house fire, and either smoke damage or water got to it, so he took it all completely (?) apart to clean it and now it's all in a box, and has been for a few years. So there should be a complete gun there, he just can't figure out how to get it all back together, or is just to intimidated to try. I still have not seen it, so I'm not 100% sure.

No pic yet. It was brought up at Thanksgiving dinner, and then today my cousin contacted me to make sure I was serious about helping out. Will probably get the box o'parts at Christmas dinner :) Just trying to collect some resources first so I'll know what I'm doing, and what to look for to make sure it's a semi-auto.

Interested to see how this develops.

I get the impression situations like this often have unexpected turns.

When I began the research on my UZI build, I bought a copy of the AGI Technical Manual & Armorer's Course DVD on the UZI. It was a good addition to all the tech stuff I was reading. If you get a chance to check it out, you'll find it to be helpful.

Well Christmas came a bit early, picked up the box 'o parts today.

Looks like it's an IMI Model A semi-auto receiver (according to the markings) and it's got a 16 inch barrel, so I assume it's legit.

I found out a little bit more about it. Seems the cousin's friend borrowed the uzi from a coworker, then put it in his attic, as one does, then his house caught fire. :( The uzi and three of his guns that survived were sent to a gunsmith who has kept all four for two or three years now. He refinished the uzi, except for the barrel, but refused to assemble it, and it took the co-worker, whose brother is a lawyer(? got a bit hazy here) to get him to release it, but he would not assemble it, and said "there are at least two springs missing." He still refuses to return the other firearms. The ATF has been called, but said "meh" (remember, I am hearing this third or fourth hand, so who knows) I do not know the name of this gunsmith, but have asked back up the chain to find out so that I don't ever use him (or her, I suppose).

Anyway, I now have the box of parts, so what now? I have ordered the AGI video, it'll probably be here after Christmas.

Anything else I need, or should have handy when I try to put it all back together?

Any special tools needed? Or that are handy?

Lastly, the owner of the uzi wants to know if I'm interested in buying it. Sure, but right now it's just parts, and I have no idea what it's worth, if it'll ever work, or if it'll blow up the first time it's fired (was in a fire, after all). Any thoughts on value as is? or when it's all assembled?

Thanks!

-Mike

Are there more parts than you have pictured? IE: lower trigger & mag housing, bolt, etc.

Yes, there are more parts.

I took pictures of the bolt, but what am I supposed to be looking for? not sure if it shows up in the picture.

Also, a quick glance showed me that there is no barrel nut, nor is the cocking nob there. May be other parts missing, too.

All the parts that were in the pill bottle were sand blasted, and were not parked, so the sight and other small parts need to be finished. And the barrel.

Can you take a picture of the inside of the receiver? A shot from the top of the entire length would be great.

This box of parts should go together very easily. If you are interested in it make the guy an offer and keep it!

If you can locate aftermarket parts:

Receiver: $250.00
Bolt: $225.00
Barrel: $140.00
Semi sear:$25.00
Kit: $175.00

+build cost +refinishing cost

These are original IMI Pre 89 parts, best I can tell.

Buy it!!!!

Reassembly

I think everything you need to put it back together is right here on Uzitalk.
For instance, the Lower is the most complicated and here is a step-by-step:Assembling a Lower

It's the last day of spring break, so I'm just now working on it :)

I'm assembling the lower (already have the top cover and sights assembled) using the instructions on the site cliff52 supplied.

I get to the trigger, and I'm stumped.

Is there a better picture of how it should look? I think I am doing it right, but the trigger will not move, so I assume I am doing it wrong.

the trigger spring has a rectangle-ish part, where does that go?

Also, just figured out that the selector switch button is missing :( will need to order one.

Thanks!
