Howdy!

OK, so I did some research on the forum here before I posted and so I hope this doesn't get seen as a newb hitting you up for info and not contributing.

Results of my research and more pics are below.

Before I bought this rifle I thought it was a Ban era Mossberg import IMI Galil - not sure if just the barreled receiver variant or complete rifle. It seemed to be authentic and there are not other import markings (which I think odd) or MFG markings of any kind save for "IMI" and "Made in Israel."

It would have been assembled/imported during the ban, but looks to have been modified I think during and after the Ban. I think if would have been originally assembled with a wood stock and an 18" non-threaded barrel. It looks to have a very early Tapco G2 FCG, but no Tapco markings - FSE USA?

The left side selector is push forward to fire.

Sometime during the ban it had an ATF approved compensator blind/pin welded after cutting the barrel down to 16.25" and a pinned folding stock installed - they use a solid pin (possibly drill rod) that was too short.

The pin for the folding stock must've been cut post-Ban. The Bipod probably was adding sometime after its original configuration.

I read a few post here and elsewhere that seemed to verify the wording on the receiver and such, but I've not seen any pictures, so I can't verify by font or exact location, ect. Ultimately i purchased it out of fear that I was looking at a great deal and did not want to pass it up.

THEN, I came across all of those threads debunking forgery Galils on GunBroker. Damn, things starting to look off - like it not have a 2nd Import mark after the first being removed - so I am now suspect of the rifle.

The good - it shoots great, operates great, no signs of heat treat issues or the like. Golani's seem to be fetching $800, I figure this one could still be a "fair" deal at the price I purchased it at.

The Bad - well, I'll let you Gents that know a lot more about these rifles than me be the judge.

so here are pics - I neglected to get a close up of the right side where it has an address and the warning/ find a manual lingo:

What does your serial # start with? My IMI Sporter starts with 031-XX

Mine is a bit different 9713xxxx. I was hoping that might be indicative of its mfg date - sometime in 1997.

Thanks for all the input to all who have replied. I really like the rifle, so keeper no matter what, but not sure if it goes into the "heirloom" side of the safe or the "shoot the piss out of it side"

See if it goes on the heirloom side I get to see if I can get another built for shooting the piss out of.

It is a real receiver/barrel, but likely a kit-build and not a factory gun.

Its known mossberg imported IMI receivers and barreled receivers, but IIRC no complete guns.

Thanks all - sounds like a keeper no matter and considering what I am seeing Golani's and the kit builds on GunBroker advertised for I think I got a good deal.

Now, I just need 2 more to get the magic 3... AR, ARM, SAR...

When did you buy the gun?

Barrel looks authentic IMI marked.

Better pictures of the stock? Can't tell if it's the .308 version or SAR version w/ rubber buttpad.

Paint and park looks correct and receiver safety notches in correct position.

Where I question is the Clinton Federal AWB went into effect in 1994, unsure of exact ban start date, but 1997 seems awfully late to have been a pre-ban gun... Uncertain if sporters, etc, could have been the origination of this rifle.

Somewhere on here I believe there is info about correct serial numbers for IMI rifles by periods as well. Don't know that info offhand either.

Can't tell and don't know enough about receiver markings to comment.

My prime takeaways are probably not actually an IMI built gun but from pics provided there does seem to be attention to detail.

You have a good rifle. "UZI AMERICA" is machined out. "971" is the correct pre-fix on the serial number. The late 90's rifle (your barrel is stamped with a year 1997) came with a 16 inch barrel. The rest of your descriptions are correct, including the font; except the fact someone put the flash hider on the end of it.

The only thing I didn't like was the safety manual wording on the right side of the receiver.

I lot of them came in the ARM configuration. I own in both a .308 and 5.56 rifle. They are great rifles with factory parts; but mainly the barreled receiver.

Let me know if you have anymore questions; as I have purchased many Galil's in all models.
