Wow, I was thinking of cutting my rear sight off in favor of a red dot.

Eh do it, set it up the way you like it. I don’t think most guys here have seen Sam‘s work. damaged guns, Texas macs, mac flats, new back plates... you couldn’t tell the difference...

It’s A Mac. The only thing that makes it valuable is the little piece of paper with a stamp on it. Sam will make it look factory new if it bothers you, but as Rybread stated. The oem sights are basically useless. If it’s good deal, get it and have fun!!!

i think mine shot low...id have to bend the back sight in 1/2 to shoot on target...i literally had to stand 5' from the target to find it on the paper at the bottom it shoots so low

GG is the only way to go..throw out that factory upper

use a handgun red dot...trijicon mro

Probably a lot less cost to just have a rail mounted on the existing upper and use an iron rear sight or an electronic sight mounted on the rail than to buy the suggested upper, or to have a replacement back plate with sight hole installed.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to pursue.

MHO, YMMV, etc.

Dumb question. Do any of the uppers like Lage or Tenko use the rear sight plate as a brace point or anything? The seller said he would weld on a new rear sight plate and refinish the gun. He’s a dealer and from looking at his work he should be able to easily weld it on and make it look like a new gun.

It’s a decent deal on it so that’s why I’m thinking about the purchase.

Yeah if he’s doing it i’d walk. The first generation Lage upper screwed on via the sight plate, so it does matter sometimes. That mounting is no longer a thing, but i would obstantively refuse to buy a high dollar rare gun worked on by anything less than a specialist (Sam at Practical Solutions).

What’s the price? It requires cutting a receiver back, rewelding, and reparking. A repark is probably $400, then $100 in shipping without insurance, plus the other stuff, shipping risks, time lost, etc. and if it ain’t on the whole gun it won’t look right.

Cruel as it may be I don’t know if I’d buy one like that for so much as over $5k. If it was easy, why wasn’t it already done? But Sam can make it look like new though that is for sure. Sounds like you have a very lazy seller.

Plus the gunsmith costs and giving the gun to the smith for 6 months —$1000 to me

You can always just have the dealer transferring the gun to mail it out on a repair order so it doesn't add any time. I bought a m11/380 middle of last year(sadly still waiting on the stamp). Dealer dropped it off with TSC Machine to fix a small issue with it after I bought it and to refinish the gun. Mike went through it and replaced the fire control group and did some other stuff as well as modify my lage upper for 3 lug that I ordered and refinished all of it to match. The dealer then picked it back up next time he was in TSC's area.

I’m looking at a M11A1 and the previous owner cut the rear sight off (triangle portion). Would it be an easy fix to replace the rear sight? I’m guessing remove the old one and weld on a new plate. Can it be fixed up without telling it was replaced?

Thanks!

yes it is an easy fix if you are not up to it then there are a few shops who can and will do it.

No, to fix that, bend the front sight down to bring the muzzle up when aiming. Leave the back (rear) sight alone!

In theory yes. Looks simple enough, but I snapped off a front sight while attempting to adjust it just slightly. Others may have a different experience, but my front sight “post” was clearly brittle.
That's always possible... Thankfully I've not had that issue on the Macs for which I've adjusted sights. But next time I might heat it slightly with a propane torch first just in case!

I was totally considering cutting off the rear sight on my m11 myself...Guess I am in the minority.

I wouldn't really have an issue with it if it didn't leave a hole at the back of some uppers. What was your reasoning for wanting to remove it?
