So here is my baby, rescued from the century beavers with their sledge hammers, crescent wrenches and dremels...

Work done:
New barrel, new stock, new bolt, spare gas tube with welded on steel Warne rail. Media blasted, parkerized, cerakoted Mil Tan. Test fired with every magazine.

Nice. What would we do without Jeff? The finish certainly breaks your rifle out of the everyday look and the sling is a nice touch.

The sling could stand to be another 10" longer. I have to do some more looking around or maybe get one custom made.

One of the things that drove Jeff nuts was discovering that Cerakote when baked in the oven, cures to slightly different colors depending on how thick the metal part is. So every piece is a slightly different shade. All the mags match, but the gas tube, dust cover, receiver etc are different thicknesses and don't match perfectly. Its the same issue with the SCAR rifles, same finish. I told Jeff that it was just a practical matter with our high humidity Michigan climate and I preferred not to have exposed steel if I can avoid it. A black weapon is also stigmatized in my mind as a "police" weapon, from my youth and it does not blend in well in most hunting environments, particularly after November... Hence I chose the Military Tan. It took about a week for the manufacturer to ship the cerakote order and then it goes ground all the way from WA... That caused quite the delay with the build... We had to figure out which was the most appropriate Warne steel rail to weld to the gas tube, and that was a hassle, since Warne does not publish clear dimensional info on their rails anywhere, so I finally figured out that the TC series of single shot rifles (encore) had a diameter that was closest to our gas tube. I believe it was less that $45 for the rail.

Westcliff, Congrats on your rifle, You did a excellent job. What is the reason you chose Cerakote? I ask because I had one of my 1911's finished in Duracoat. Did you investigate between the two before making your decision? Does military tan Cerakote hold up to the high heat temps without changing color especially on the barrel? I hope to finish a rifle in HK Gloss Cerakote in the near future' Thank You

Cerakote appears to be a much more durable finish than other paint. They have an air dry and oven dry formulations, you have to be sure that you get the type you want. I wanted the oven cured, since it is then "fully stabilized". Its the same process as chosen by FNH and the vast majority of custom gun makers. I figure they know what they are doing and didn't choose the cheapest option for service weapons.

I obviously wasn't looking for a gloss finish. That would show marks a lot quicker than the flat finish I have (which is a MIL spec formulation). I explained to Jeff that if I come inside after being out at this time of year (or even having it in my truck) the weapon would be covered in frost on every exposed surface in seconds. Then in a few minutes it thaws and the whole thing is dripping condensation. On my blued guns, I have to wipe them down right away, swab the bore and immediately apply a light oil like WD40 to avoid any issues. This can still happen in areas masked by the stock, so I have to remove the actions from the stock more frequently than I care for to be sure it is all good.

In future I am either going with stainless steel, or creakote to try to reduce maintenance.

The credit is all to Jeff, he just did my bidding... I know he did buy a bunch of those scope rails, in case anyone else wants a rail equipped gas tube...

Westcliff thanks for the info. I spoke with Jeff and he really likes the Cerakote. I feel your pain on condensation. I live in Iowa and the winters tend to be long. I made the mistake of not checking my Ruger 10/22 in one of my cases after being stored in my truck, to my horror my barrel had rusted that quick when I opened the case. Thanks again for sharing and yes! Jeff is the man when it comes to Galil's.

Grudgingly you have to give the Century "Craftsmen" credit for attempting to produce a affordable Galil. But Jeff gets the credit with keeping this fine firearm available to us US citizens by fixing the Century Blunders and turning them into a real Galil. You have a fine looking rifle and I think you choose wisely in your finish. It should give you and your children, grandchildren, ect. years of fine service. Cheers to you and Jeff.
