I ordered a wooden QD stock last week from Copes Distributing and was not too jazzed about the plain vanilla finish that came on the piece. I stripped it and restained with Minwax Red Mahogany to match the furniture on my Zastava M92, and Voila!

Looks good....cause I did the same with mine w/ the same stain! Finished with Tung oil.

A note to those who have these stocks - Got mine from "keepshooting". The park or whatever finish on it's metal was rough as heck and left gross marks that resembled chalk on a board even from scratching with fingernail.
Took the metal off, covered lightly in oil, and polished with steel wool. Didnt take much, and it's now silky smooth in both touch and looks.

Just do keepshooting. I got two there (pictured in my post above). Both good condition. I'd say 8/10.

They do have a rewards thing, I dont think Copes has any current offers that justifies the $ difference.

I just used sandpaper. Whatever finish they use on these is pretty thin. Took me maybe 15min to sand the finish off. I think I used 150-200grit. And as far as these stocks go, they are very forgiving. You aren't going to sand away any features anytime soon. Just make sure you take it down evenly and get all the old stuff off.

Edit- And as you can tell, even with a dark stain you still end up with some blonde highlights. Mine is 8 coats of the Minwax. It wouldn't get any darker.

Its a soft wood, I've done several in the past. If you have dings or dents, just put a wet wash cloth and hot iron on it, it will bring the ding back flush. Then sand as usual.
