Another member shared their collection and included a pic of one of the Atchisson 4 blade “throwing hunter” knives that were sold by RPB and SWD throughout the late 70s into the early 80s.

They are really cool novelties. I have collected most every variety with the exception of the earliest pre-RPB “W.A.K” marked version that Atchisson sold through Bingham Ltd in the late 70s.

RPB marketed the knife around the same time as “Bingham LTD” starting in around 1977 and offered them with a variety of different sheaths from black to camo to leather.

At some point around 1985-86 SWD decided the throwing knives weren’t a big seller and started hacking them up and making MAC bayonets out of them (far left green sheath) they milled Atchisson’s throwing knife patent off the blades for this application.

The MAC bayonets threaded directly to the barrel and were offered in 5/8x11 (.380 M11) 3/4x10 (9mm M10/M11) 7/8x9 (.45 M10) and a carbine version that utilized a 5/8x24 threaded nut to hold it on the end of the barrel

Lots of variety with the knives (just like the guns) from RPB to SWD, different color sheaths, different logos embossed on the leather, different logos stamped on the blade themselves, different rollmarks on the blades etc… everything “Cobray” is fun to collect because the variations are endless, they never made the same thing for more than a few months without changing something to make it cheaper to make.

The SWD version of the knife was recently being sold by FTF on their website as “new old stock”. Given the condition of the knives they’re selling, I believe they are newly manufactured from original components. They sold out at least twice but keep “finding more in the warehouse”and restocking. They’re selling them for $150 but show them as out of stock at the moment, if you watch the site they may “find another box in the warehouse” again sometime soon.

The Cobray stuff just screams "1980's". I would have went nuts over that throwing knife as a kid.

I'm confused about the "Cobray Firearms, Smyrna, Georgia" thing. Did Cobray actually make guns? The Street Sweeper and Ladies Home Companion I believe were both made by Street Sweeper INC in Atlanta and the M-10's and M-11's were made by MAC, RPB, SWD, etc. Was Cobray the parent company, or did they just license their name and logo to different manufacturers? I think I also read somewhere that Cobray was a "counter-terrorism training center" too?

The street sweeper shotgun was manufactured by SWD Inc out of Atlanta GA. “Street sweeper sales” was a retail distributor. SWD Inc was owned by Sylvia and Wayne Daniel, SWD was Sylvia Daniel’s initials. “Cobray firearms” was also owned by Sylvia and Wayne, it was a retail distributor for their SWD manufactured guns. They started using “Cobray firearms” in around 1987 to distribute SWD guns.

They had a handful of retail outfits like this that they used to distribute parts and firearms manufactured by SWD INC.

The original RPB company 78-82 was also owned by Wayne Daniel. He shut down RPB in 1982 and started up SWD with his wife, Sylvia, in 1983. He then restarted RPB in 1985 as a retailer for accessories only, no FFL, so they didn’t have to keep any records of sales after SWD was raided by the Feds in 85 and their customer records seized.

The ladies home companion was also manufactured by SWD, they came up with the LHC as a means of using up leftover SS parts when the gun was classified as a destructive device.

The Cobray counter terrorism school was owned by Mitch Werbell. Wayne Daniel sued Werbell in the early 80s when he trademarked the Cobray name and logo and Werbell changed the name to SIONICS.

Werbell was the original inventor of the “Cobray” word and logo design in the late 60s. The Cobray snake logo was originally intended to look like the letter S, for SIONICS (it was a bit different looking early on) which was werbells original manufacturing company under which he made Ingram SMGs and suppressors. Sionics became military armament corp.

The timeline can be tough to piece together, it helps to have 100s of issues of shotgun news from the 80s. These companies all advertised in SGN and the advertising material often holds missing pieces to the puzzle etc. the MAC MAN book is another great place to start if you wanna learn about the history of these companies.

From the MAC MAN book...
Color images were taken in 2010, the rest were from the late Don Thomas, who worked there.
In the color picture, the repealing tower can be seen on the right.
The benches behind Werbell in the 1970s, the color photo shows the same benches in 2010 rotting away.
Picture of SWD's Wayne Daniel in 2010

Sadly, the once-beautiful WerBell property has recently been cleared and leveled for a housing development.

I live in North Georgia and sadly that kind of thing is happening all over the place now. Used to be people didn't want to live around here which left it relatively unspoiled for us locals to enjoy. Now they are flocking here from all over the place buying up all the farmland for apartment complexes and ruining all the local attractions with their stupid TikTard videos.

That thing is SO cool! I'd wear it proudly, stains and all. I ordered one of these recently but I'd rather have an original one with stains on it ?

awesome Wayne pic
Wayne was somewhat difficult to track down, but we found him just over the GA border (by somewhat nefarious means ;)). He was very friendly and shared what info he could remember. I had scanned several documents and pictures he had, but somehow they got deleted from my laptop ?.

My buddy and fellow collector @MAC MAN said he recognizes that picture!

Wayne is an enigma. I dont think I have ever seen a photo of him younger than age 60. I think the earliest pic of him that is publicly available is this ad, from SWD featured in a 1987 issue of guns and ammo.

Wayne and Sylvia, before she went blonde… with Wayne providing executive protection for her (and her Rolls Royce)

IMG_2050.jpeg

Here is another pic of Wayne, from USA TODAY, from an article condemning their guns and business practices and their willingness to exploit loopholes and gray areas to sell questionably legal firearms and accessories ?

IMG_2051.jpeg

Another classic pic of the Daniels on the cover of their mountain accessories catalog, they are barely visible. This was clearly taken during the same photoshoot as the 1987 guns and ammo ad.

IMG_2052.jpeg

The late Sylvia Daniel, the First Lady of firearms… from the same USA TODAY article mentioned above
IMG_2053.jpeg

Wayne in People magazine circa 1998 after they were sued (once again) when some young guy from NYC got shot with an M11/9 in the early 90s by an Islamic extremist, and his family went after the Daniels.

IMG_2055.jpeg

There are lots of current pics of Wayne in his 80s out there on social media, it’s become harder and harder to hide from the camera in 2025 ?

But prior to the modern digital age, Wayne and Sylvia were both very camera shy. For those who aren’t aware, Sylvia sadly passed away fairly young in the early 2000s.

because SWD got busted in 1985 for selling suppressors and machine guns illegally to an undercover ATF agent posing as the leader of a California outlaw biker gang. There was a big sting operation and they busted and raided SWD and a few associates of theirs.

SWD was selling suppressor internal parts kits and they had their HVAC guys (Ledbetter and motes) start a business making the tubes for them and they would sell the tubes directly across from SWD at gun shows.

Here’s a link to an LA times article from 1985 about it:

and a link to another article from 1985

Here’s some related writings that were printed by SWD and distributed pertaining to the case against them

Here’s an ad Wayne and Sylvia had published in shotgun news, they printed the names of the ATF agents involved in the bust and the ATF sued Wayne and it looks like SGN was forced to cover the names with a sticker (which has been removed in this copy)
