Shortest Max-11/15 barrel length...

I have the IRM version of the Max-11/15, and was curious what the shortest length 556 barrel I might be able to install would be.

I know Richard ran an 8" with the flash enhancer.

For the beta testers who ran different barrels, what is the shortest barrel length you used, and how did it run?

Thanks in advance!

I asked him about it at knob creek and he said the 7/8” would go thru gas tubes often.

Idk, that 8” setup so far has been my favorite. I guess with the right heavy use adjustable gas block it should be fine.

It works fine unless you are doing Beta mag’ dumps. 100 rounds of continuous fire really heats up the gas tube.

Also, if you are going to use an adjustable gas block, make sure it is rated for the shorter barrel length you are using. The Odin Works adjustable gas block on the MAX-11/15 is not rated for pistol length barrels. I tried one with a 7-1/2” or 8” barrrel and cracked it.

I have a new 8 inch 556 but it’s still in the shipping box, as so far the 10.5 has been pretty sufficient in every way and I wanted a different barrel shroud that turned out to be the right length for the stock barrel & I like the current gas block.

Thanks Richard, exactly what I was wondering!

I saw a 4 inch barrel 5.56 AR years back on Arfcom.

Never heard of anything shorter than that.

I really like the Odin Works adjustable block. After tuning it, the upper shot so soft!
Is an adjustable gas block a necessity with the IRM? Would running a 7.5/8" barrel without one be hard on the upper/bolt and cause excessive wear?

Thanks

I had a 7.5” 5.45 that would eat a gas tube like clockwork at ~2000 rounds of full auto.

The Odin block is why I still have the stock barrel on, I really like it and can’t get over how smooth it shoots!!

Yep! This was my first adjustable gas block, and it’s great. Hope I can find one that can handle pistol length...

It is so hard to "tune" a pistol length gas system. The pressure is so high at that point that 0.001" or 0.002" difference in gas port size can be the difference between short stroke and over gassed.

That’s the beauty of an external buffer system. You can quickly swap buffers to make adjusts to the ROF, barrel lengths, or for weak, unerpowered ammo. An adjustable gas system is also helpful.

Scott knows how much I enjoy the 7 1/2” upper on my RR M-16. It’s loud, gives a heavy concussion, and throws a lot of flame. Sure, it’s a lot of fun, but I wouldn’t want it as a steady diet, and thankfully the platform lends itself to quick change uppers. I believe Richard has selected the perfect one size fits all length. That’s what I’d run. Just saying...

I totally agree that the 10.5 inch barrel is the perfect size! Since it is so easy to change, I thought it would be fun to set up an 8 inch barrel with the flash enhancer and my collapsible stock, just like Richard did.

In everyone’s opinion, would it hurt anything to run an 8 inch barrel without an adjustable gas block?

I concur- Richard has done his customers a service is producing this in a pretty optimal configuration.. I don’t need or want to change it up much aside from cosmetic stuff. A carry handle and M-60 style stock on my MAC-11/15 and I think this one will be done.

In my opinion, it would be possible to run such a barrel length. As posted above it takes very little port size difference to go from short stroke to over gassed. Buy the barrel, install it, and try it. I would start with new steel cased Wolf ammo. The recent made stuff seems weak to me. If it short strokes, try more powerful ammo working your way up to NATO 5.56X45 before opening the gas port.
