I got a really dumb question, would I need an SOT or Manufacture License to make a 70 round drum for my Uzi? I wouldn't think since it would be for my own use, but wanted to see before I went ahead with the project.

Now if it works an I wanted to make a few and sell them, then that's a different story right?

that is a dumb question ;) you dont need any license to make a magazine, or to sell them. As long as your state doesnt have an issue with hi-cap mags you are fine.

I'm not sure but I thought Ohio had some funny law about 31 rounds turning your gun into a machinegun.YMMV

Since it would be going in a RR Uzi, it wouldn't matter since it is a machine gun. I know it was a stupid question, but I'd rather ask it than be sorry latter on. If I can make it work, how much demand you thinntherw qiuld be or more of them? Because I can't see $250-$350 when i've got the tooling and the skills that I can make my own.

Does Vector still make them? If they do I would not bother...If not there might be some market but I do not believe it would be a good return on the time invested (maybe if you are retired). I have two Vector drums.....I only load mine up for Subgun matches...for general shooting the 32 or 25 rnd mags are my first choice. I would think the laws regarding your State would be pretty easy to look up.....

Or you could wait for the Beta-C uzi version coming out......or the korean mp5 drum copy and attach your easily made uzi tower....and in all actuality I too wanted a drum, but when I thought about it appx $300 for 68 rounds? Not so much, I'd rather tape two 32rd mags that cost $7 each and deal with the interruption halfway through the 64 round dump ;)

I too look at 2 32 round mags is alot cheaper. Tho a drum looks cool and I'd like the challenge of making one of my own. If it'd work, sweet, if it wouldn't, well I'm not out much.

Dude, you've got access to a machine shop, I say DO IT! We are doing these things in our garages with only the basic tools.

Almost everything you need to know is right here:
http://www.uzitalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54837
I can even send you mine to inspect when you are ready.

My only advise is to build one because you want one and then build another if you want to help others get one. If you go into it thinking you are going to make mucho $$$, you may start to cut corners and then they won't run right.

These are not difficult to build, but they are time consuming to get right and you will have about $100-$130 in parts and ammo and 5-6 hours of shop time. The ammo is a killer, especially if you rush through it and can't figure out why it won't run. Build one that runs first, then use that as a template. Don't try and make changes on the fly after you get one working.

Also, drums are just plain cool. We have machineguns and anything else to put them over the top is good in my book. Sure, 2 32 rounders taped together will get the job done, but you can't beat the sound of 70 continuous rounds!

If you have the skills to make a drum why not make a "frankenmag" stick by joining two 32 round sticks together. Heck of a lot cheaper to do. Local guy made one for his Mac and it works pretty well and he admits to not being a machinist.

If you screw up you are out the cost of 2 32 round sticks ($18) rather than the cost of the Suomi drum ($25).

I could say "because it's not the destination, it's the journey" or "the tactical advantage of the drum is far superior than... (blah, blah, blah)", but in actuality, drums are just way cooler than a 2 foot long stick mag, plus you can shoot prone. :D

Like I said, I'm doing theis for the challenge, to see if I can do it. And your right drums are cool. I've already made new charging handles for my Usi and other little things, so why not try this now? What's the worst I can do? Mess up and out less that $50? I spend more than that when I gout out on Friday night with my buddies, and least I'll have something to show for this or know what I dis wrong.

I'm with u Vector. I too am working on a beta mag for my S&W76. Why - because I want one. It will probably be only 1 or 2 in the world. Will Beta Corp mag one for my weapon - I doubt it.

I also look at it this way, if the project fails and I can't get it to reliably feed correctly, then I can sell a slightly use MP5 beta mag.

Here is what it should look like:

Yeah - DeGroat was supposed to be making Beta towers for the Uzi, M11, MAC10, etc. It's been on the "back burner" for about 5 years now.

Anyone else out there making them?

eta: never mind. Found this teaser.

Seeing that SW76 made me think of something...

I spoke to a guy at C&S who originally made the Suomi drum conversions. He told me that the short magwell guns were the easiest conversions. He said the MP5s, SW76 & Sten Colts ran so well that they didn't even have to test them to full capacity. I guess the length of the mag well is directly proportional to the difficulty of getting these conversions to run.

I got my drum today. Looking forward to getting started on it soon as I can get a few other things off my plate in the shop. Will keep you updated on the drum making status.

I thought so too. Any truth to this, or has OH become sane? Also, I thought OH passed statewide pre-emption. Is this the case?
