completely dissembled it and spent hours cleaning the SS...I bought it from the prison wardens son. I believe he was a heavy smoker as the SS was heavily stained and took time to scrub clean. Gun is mint and was supposedly only shot 60 rounds....it showed no signs of ever being taken apart...

any chance of ever finding the correct SS 30 round mag?

Ruger never made stainless Mini-14/AC-556 magazines. But back in the day, a company called PMI did make them. PMI stainless magazines fit and work nicely.

Oops. I had the initial of the company wrong. Thanks ScottinTexas for the correct name.

form 4 to my dealer in 2 months, then took 5.5 months to get my form 4 stamp.....the form 4 had some errors on it and it got sent back 3 weeks ago....so it could have been 2-3 weeks sooner possibly if the form 4was correct...

i will have my new outdoor gun range completed on friday and plan to shoot it on saturday (i shot it a bit at the dealer already too).....i will be contacting the sheriff to let him know whats going to be happening....seems like most of the advice ive gotten is to be proactive with law enforcement.....i will shooting it 7 football fields back into the woods, so i dont know if he could even locate where the shooting is coming from, but i assume eventually he will....so why not make it easy and simple......also plan to tell the 2 neighbors on either side

mg34_dan...thanks for the info on the mags......when you do a pic search for Kac556f you do see some pics of SS mags...most are blued though.....and the Ateam pic has a SS mag also...but they also have some added stuff on the gun that isnt stock....i believe it was a mini-14 and they added FA sound effects

I enjoyed mine the few times I got to shoot it, you should really like it. My M11-A1 form 4 was approved on June 10th (check cashed Dec 8th), just waiting on it to arrive in the mail.

Congratulations on your new purchase. You really need to pick up a Ceiner 22 kit for it. I shoot more 22 out of mine than I do .233. At 1800 rpm it's every bit as much fun and from my experiences very reliable. This is just the beginning I'm sure you are already looking at which machine gun to buy next. It's a really bad addiction.

I've read multiple threads on other forums about Mini-14 stainless magazines. I'm not convinced either way. I've read credible assertions favoring both points. I've read where it was suggested that PMI mags with the base plates swapped for Ruger base plates were a possibility.
Another oddity: rear sling swivels. Many of these folders are missing the rear swivel. I've seen a couple of photos that show what appears to be a stainless swivel, but the overwhelming majority of these swivels are blued when on either blued or stainless guns.

Probably Ruger didn't much care about such details.

Is the rear swivel stainless of blued?

About 8-10 years or so ago I bought maybe among the last of the swivels Ruger had. It was just two but it was implied they were the last or nearly so.

Anyway, it's a distinctive swivel that so far I've been unable to match in the market. And these two from Ruger are blued, as are those on a couple of Mini-14 semi folders I bought 5-10 years ago.

From a preventative maintenance I'd apply grease (not oil, Grease!) liberally as the Ruger stainless castings are known to gall.

Just to be on the safe side. It's not like they're replacing receivers anymore...

any pics of the galling??

i bathed it in Hoppes solvent for hours, dried it and then sprayed the hell out of it with Remington gun oil...

as for the swivels----i did find it odd one is SS and one Blued

mine also has a more robust stock nuckle/pivot...more like a mini-14 style.....when i look up pics and ones for sale i see both styles.....most are the smaller style though (not like mine)...mine is a late production 4/1984 and i had thought they dropped the 2 different styles and went with 1 part to save $$..........or my gun was rebuilt at one point and got the larger pivot....the wood is near flawless....and without being in storage in bubble wrap its hard to believe it was so well cared for as not to have dents/scratches in the wood in 32 years

i called Ruger to ask about my gun and serial #.....they wont give any info other than when it was made....i asked if it had been rebuilt...they wont give the info....they dont even have a correct manual to hand out anymore...i got a free mini-14 manual instead

ill have to look into the galling issue

No pics but its a known issue. To be safe I'd grease the friction areas inside the receiver before shooting.

I've owned a semi factory folder in stainless and I regret selling it years ago during the Sandy Hook craze although I made out like a bandit!

I use grease on every action!

what type of grease...i had to look up what galling was

it appears to mean= increased friction which can cause parts to freeze up

i know the AC556 is not a military weapon...i plan on waiting 5 mins or so between 30 round mags to keep the temps down........i dont plan on being aggressive like i am with my Uzi or Thompson......

will taking it easy on the gun = less chance of galling?

Galling is when two pieces of metal basically fuse together due to lack of lubrication and similar hardness coupled with high pressure. Taking it easy on the gun shouldn't effect the propensity for the metal to gall specifically, but it will save your barrel and help to prevent the lubrication from breaking down or smoking off, which could lead to galling. Lubrication is what you need to prevent galling in this case. An anti-seize compound would work best, but any sort of lubrication should work fine.

The only certain cure is to put the AC556 in the safe forever and replace it with a shooter M16/M16a1/M614.

only gonna shoot it 2x a year probably.

FP-10 is the product i typically use as a lubricant on the moving parts....and remington oil just to coat everything else.....ill make sure to squirt extra FP-10 into the action before i go to the range..
