I just picked up a couple of "good" sterling mags from Apex. Bearly "good" more like fair. Both had been painted at one point, now most of that is gone, no rust but one of the mags had been rusty at one time and had lots of minor pitting. I am planing on cerakoting these mags however there is a small flat spring on the back of the mag that I need to remove. Do I pop out the pin or is there a different way of removing the spring?

They call it a pin, but it’s really a rivet. Best to tape over the spring and not try to take it out. Though a light coat is not going to hurt the spring.

Thanks. I was concerned about baking the finish at 250 degrees for two hours. May have to pick a different finish.

I have cerakoted many sterling magazines without any problems. I don't bother taping over the spring. I just apply the finish right over everything after the magazines have been bead blasted clean and internals are stripped down. The finish holds up really nice. Never had any problems with baking the finish.

The iregular shaped pin pops out, not a rivet in the traditional sense. Comes out with a light tap to get past the groove on the pin. 2 second job! - faster than taping and finish results looks much better and closer to factory.

If you don't remove it and bead blast, it sometimes difficult to get the crunchy blast media out from the nooks and crannies under the spring.

Beautiful...

Those refinished mags look really nice. I picked up five at a local gun show a while back and they are pretty rough. Looks like I have a project.
