Edited to add : see pics in UZI PICTURES FORUM ...

so i have a factory IMI wood stock i bought used ... i decided to make a project stock out of it .. ( pics to come later ) ..
anyway .. i sanded down the varnish .. poly .. what ever you wanna call it .. and i noticed the wood was .. almost .. wet .. so . .i began to cut into it ( pics to follow later ) .. and after i cut into it .. it was like bleeding moisture .. so i smell .. and look .. and feel .. and .. my hypothesis is .. its oil .. im guessing linseed oil .. the stock is SATURATED with it .. im NOT happy .. i HOPED to sand off the sheen on the stock .. wash it down with a quick rinse of acetone .. and paint ....
NOW .. i CANT get the oil out of the stock .. im BATHING it in a bath of acetone .. every time i take the stock out .. and set it in the sun .. 5 minutes later the acetone evaporates .. and the oil starts to bleed heavily out of the wood ..
so now i cant get the oil to stop comin out the wood . and im not gonna have a chance to paint this thing this year .. WTF ..

i THOUGHT i might wash the stock in the dish washer with dish washing soap .. that dish washer soap REALLY cuts into grease .. and im hoping .. if i end up trying this method .. that the heat and soap get out enough oil so i can paint this stock .. otherwise ill have to stain it and hope for the best ...

SO .. roverdave .. its CLEAR that during the stock making process .. IMI either boils .. or soaks the stocks in some type of oil before putting the final shilack on them and sending them on their way .. how cool would it be to find out WHY this is done and in what manner ? .. some homework for you dave ?

STOCK STRIPPING

WHAT I DO WITH MY OLD MIL. STOCKS IS I SPRAY THEM A FEW TIMES WITH HEAVY DUTY OVEN CLEANER LIKE EASY OFF AND DRAWS OUT THE OIL AND GREASE. JUST WASH THEM GOOD WITH SOAP AND WATER BETWEEN COATS.

I'll bet a guy like Michael Bush knows the answer to that. I haven't seen him here lately. I'll check with him.

Heavy duty oven cleaner is an old stock stripping technique. Do it in the bathtub. Spray it liberally, let it work a couple of minutes, then rinse thoroughly under running water. Try not to inhale, the fumes are terrible.

Let the stock dry thoroughly, sand lightly, and refinish.

I've done this on an old Garand and it works very well.

EDIT - I see someone above mentioned the same thing. :cool

I used to refinish old Garand stocks and some of them can be soaked! I put them in the oven on low and the oil will leach out so you can wipe it off. You will need to do this a few times over a couple of hours. Good Luck!
