What silencers are you using with your 9mm HK guns (i.e. MP5, 5K, P30, VP9, etc.). For the combo 3-lug, direct thread barrel mounts with use for suppressors with 3-lug are you replacing your knurled thread protectors with smooth ones as Gemtech strongly suggests (will void you warranty if you don't)?

Up to now my only experience in suppressing HKs is with the MK-9K silencer from Gemtech on the MP5 family set up for 3-lug.. Great performer but not too versatile.

Just purchased an Omega 9K from SilencerCo and a Multimount from Gemtech for use with pistols and subguns, for both 3-lug and direct thread set-ups, and awaiting transfers. Any pros and cons on these units would be appreciated. Thank you!

I use a SIlencerCo Octane 9HD with three-lug mount. I have both the old style and new compact style SilencerCo 3lug mounts and have not had any problems. I leave the knurled thread protectors in place. I have also used my SilencerCo Hybrid with the same 3 lug mounts without any issues.

I have not shot an Omega, but I am found of SilencerCo suppressors in general.

Just curious, why does GemTech recommend replacing the knurled thread protectors?

Is it the slight back and forth movement from the 3 lug mount under recoil causing the thread protector to wear on the inside of the mount?

I use a MK-9K on the 5, and a Griffin Resistance on the 5K.

Yep, MK-9K on my MP5.

Yes, that's my understanding. It's to optimize proper alignment with the 3-lug adapted suppressor. Some thread protectors are not spec (0.5900 +/- 0.0005). Too wide and they just won't fit or tear up the adapter sleeve... Too narrow and will have wobble and poor alignment. And I think the concern about the case where the TP is in spec, but knurled is the chance of abrasive action with recoil over time and loss of alignment like you say.

These "smooth" thread protectors are hard to come by I am finding out, especially in 1/2 x 32.

Call me weird but I am not fond of the 3 lug/threaded barrels. I don't understand the point unless you are only shooting semi-auto. If I had such a barrel I would use thread locker and install a smooth thread protector. I only believe in using 3 lug mounts on MP-5s.
I have found that when silencing pistols with a right hand thread the silencer will unscrew when shooting. The 3 lug eliminates this. If I have a choice I use pistol barrels with left hand threads and they have always stayed on. I use left hand threads on a HK45 and VP9, both German barrels. Even in semi auto on a MP-5 a can with right hand threads will probably start to come off. With the 3 lug adapter choices today is there really a need to thread on a silencer to a MP-5? That threaded barrel was chosen by the Navy maybe 25 years ago?

Sounds like good advice, but there are definitely lots of threaded three lugs out there. To a certain extent we are stuck in time. When a German replica of the latest HK subgun is sought, it ends up being the 25 year old navy...

In my case all of my suppressed MP5 shooting has been with a clone host with a pure 3-lug bbl and an Mk-9k. All good. But moving on to new suppressors with the K guns I will have the navy challenge and the threaded option.

Any evidence of suppression differences between 3-lug and direct thread all else being equal?

I'm using:

Subguns and Pistols
B&T Short MP5
SiCo Omega 9k w/Rugged 3lug mount
SiCo Octane 9HD w/Rugged 3lug mount

I leave the knurled thread protector on and shoot suppressed 99% of the time. I've heard that if using the smooth protector, you need to safely remove the suppressor as soon when you're done shooting to prevent carbon from cooling down and filling the small space between inside of the mount and outside of the protector. That's what I've heard and I guess it makes sense, I stick to OEM for the knurled protector and it fits perfectly on my SiCo and B&T. The Rugged 3 lug is great and even has a spring that assists the mount in coming off and insuring you don't misalign the mount. If it's not aligned perfectly, the spring tension will push the mount off the barrel. It's a lot smaller than the SiCo one.

So your MP5 is in the box??

I wish. No, the cardboard was placed over a pitted and paint splattered desktop. Believe me, the cardboard is much more photogenic than the desktop. I hang my head in shame.

I have the Omega 9k on a Scorpion Evo, and I know you said HK and 3 lugs...but it's more about the look for me ...I like short fat cans on the front of subguns compared to long skinny tubes sticking out there ...it just makes the gun look unbalanced with that long donkey dick hanging off the front.... no I just got the new Dead are Odessa 9 and I haven't even had a chance to shoot it yet.... my buddy runs the octane 9 on his MP5 and I would like to see what the Odessa looks like in the shorter configuration on his gun..... of course there's going to be sound Test 2 but 99% of the time where we shoot everyone else is shooting unsuppressed so I'd rather look cool then have a long can that only knocks off at about another 6 or 8 decibels..... all in all I was super impressed with the Omega 9k as a sub gun can

Thanks - looking forward to trying out my Omega 9K. By sound test do you mean to measure with a dB meter? If so which one?

Looks like some here leave the knurled protectors in place with no problems... The part about the smooth protectors fouling up with carbon deposits (with seizing up the suppressor implied) is new to me, but thinking about it is not far fetched based on my experience cleaning out the suppressor and barrel on the MP5SD. But why would a smooth TP be any different than a smooth 3-lug bbl with no TP as far as fouling?

Anyway, I have incoming smooth thread protectors and will give them a whirl at some point and will post a follow-up.

Got my threaded pistol barrel and all the adapters for it and the subguns... Smooth TPs are under construction for the threaded 3-lug HK bbls. Now the transfer wait for the cans themselves. I also have a 3-lug bbl for an M11 Lage set-up which I am anxious to try out.

Anyone here do any sound measuring comparing suppressors, guns, etc If so what do you use?

My B&T came with a knurled thread protector and 3 lug, my Hybrid will not fit with the TP on, I found a .590 stainless steel one on Ebay, it was maybe 1mm too short but I used an O ring to bring it out flush with the barrel. Hybrid fits over perfect now and the TP is on solid.

All else being equal (same suppressor, same HK subgun, etc.), which is quieter - the 3 lug or thread on?

I use a Gem Tech Multi Mount suppressor that I can also use with my pistol. I have adopters for Uzi, 3 lug, and screw on.

Tell me more about the smooth protectors please. I have to remove my knurled one and run my 3 lug with no protector. I think doing that is making the supressor a bit loose
