I'm throwing in the towel on my M-11/22 kit. I've followed the advice givin to others on this forum, but this thing will not run a full magazine. The first mag does good (fires all but the last one or two rounds),but after that five or six before a FTE etc. With the third mag out one or two rounds before a stoppage. One thing I had to do was file the back of the barrel insert so the pin would go in connecting the upper and lower. Other than that, here is what I've tried.:bang

Sent off for barrel alignment
Cleaned mags and bore after every range day
Tried RGB,mini mags,Federal bulk pack ammo
Filed notch on the mags for better lock up

What else can I try?

I'm no expert but I've tuned both kits on 6 uppers. Here are some of the problems I've experienced.

1. Have you inspected the extractor alignment to insure it engages the barrel face correctly? The extractor should be centered in the relief cut of the barrel face. If the extractor hits the top of the relief cut, before the bolt is fully seated, your barrel may need to be aligned for the kit to fit properly. This is an example of poor alignment.

2. Are you using the loading tool to load the magazines? The key to reliable performance is proper, careful loading of the magazines. This is a biggie.

3. One of the smaller problems with mine was where the bolt plate was welded to the chamber block. There was a small ledge that the bolt hit 1/4 " before the round chambered. It robbed the bot of momentum and needed to be smoothed out.

4. Have you inspected the bolt movement in the upper while the upper is off the lower receiver? Does it bind or have any resistance? If so, your barrel may need to be aligned for the kit to fit properly.

5. Do not use much lubricant.

6. Be sure to jab on the trigger when firing bursts. This is not the way we are taught to shoot but it works the best for these kits. If you are able to do mag dumps but not bursts, it's usually this problem.

Here is dome of the advise Lage has provided me:

"Nose diving is caused by the rims getting crossed over during loading.

A light primer hit or the bolt catching the middle of the round can be caused by the gun not being held firmly, causing the bolt to short stroke. Short stroking can also be caused by sear drag if you do not quickly release the trigger.

Bent bullet tips from not using the loader can also cause feed problems.

Since the magazine will not seat without being bumped, it could be putting upward tension on the bottom of the barrel extension. This could cause the bolt to bind a little.

The mag' catch on the the magazine is molded at a slight angle from both sides resulting in a shallow "V" shape. The tip of the "V" will wear in.

If the magazine still does not lock in, take a file and remove a very small amount from the mag' catch on the back of the magazine. .020" will make a big difference. File a little and then check the fit. Try it with one magazine until it works, then do the rest.

If you are not comfortable doing this process, you can ship the magazines back and I will modify them for you.

If you would like to, you can send the kit and your MAX-11 and I will take a look at it and test fire it to make sure everything is lined up correctly. Free of charge. "

My Max-11/22 kit needed over 2000 rounds before the performance reached 98-99%.

Some of the ammo I experienced problems with, now works well after thousands of rounds. My first kit just needed a prolonged break-in period.

Good luck. It really is a blast to shoot once it's tuned.

I had to modify the feedlips on my mags, as per Richard's instructions. I had to sand the inside of the feedlips as to allow the top round to sit higher, because I kept having feeding problems. The bolt would just skim the top of the round without catching the rim.

Thanks Strobro,

I am very careful loading mags with loader to avoid rim lock. The extractor alignment seems good, but I may be missing something on the bolt function. I do get quite a few bent rounds with one in the chamber stoppages. Forgot to mention my three magazines are numbered and I've varied what mag I start with and get the same results.

One thing to add... if you removed material from the back of the ejector plate, it is possible that it was never properly seated in the upper. Could be a boogered up chamber edge or gunk in the recess around the 22 barrel not allowing the plate to snap into place. If the plate is too far back, even just a little (1mm is sufficient) the chamber and feed ramp will be too far toward the rear.

If you think that it is seating correctly, you may want to look at any slight back and forth movement of the ejector plate. Any movement (less the 1mm can do it) will rob the system of energy and cause issues. Try putting a thick piece of duct tape on the back of the plate and cram that sucker together so it's nice and tight.

I'm sure you are frustrated, but these kits absolutely WILL run. I purchased a MAX-11/22 kit from a friend that he said was a piece of junk and never ran. I installed in into my MAX-11 upper and it ran like a champ, over and over again. An UziTalk member has it now and I have heard nothing negative about it since.

Is your lower a 1986? When you take the upper off and look down the magwell from the top, is the magwell/grip centered?

I've got some dummie rounds, I'll check that out.

Looks like I have the same ledge. This may have caused my bent rounds.

Looks like I have the same ledge. This may have caused my bent rounds.

Take the edge off all of those corners (the sections where the bolt meets up with the chamber block) and maybe the lower part of the 22 chamber.

You should see those edges on the ejector plate I use for my 180 upper... they are no longer edges, but more like ramps. Don't be that extreme on yours though ;)

...and try it without the cocking knob once or twice. Sometimes the decreased weight can help during break-in.

By the way, how many rounds so far and what ammo? I've found that after break-in, mine still doesn't like Win555. The bullet profile is very "edgy."

When I was beta testing the MAX-11/22 kit for Richard before it went on the market I tried every kind of ammo that was available - both domestic and foreign. I can say that if you want reliability you have to pay for it, and that means CCI Mini-Mag, or preferably CCI Stingers. This is seriously expensive .22LR ammo but it works. The Stingers particularly worked every time. Always. No jams, unless it was a hardware modification that didn't pan out which I was trying out. They also cost approx. the same as 9mm rounds.

I shot so much .22LR that I became completely disenchanted with the round and declined buying one of the MAX-11/22 first kits. I don't even shoot my Colt Huntsman anymore. I've got a big box of mixed manufacture .22LR that may end up corroding from age! :)

If I did have the .22LR kit I would probably ask folks that own American 180s which .22LR ammo they have used, which to avoid, and which is most reliable.

The ejector plate snaps into place well with no play at all. I removed small amounts of material at a time untill the upper/lower pin holes barely matched up and allowed the pin to go in. Most of the 800 or so rounds have been RGB.
I'll work on the ramp a little and get to the range this week.

Thanks for the replies

Truthfully, 800 rounds is not much. Give it another 1000.

+1

My kit didn't start working well until I put a couple thousand rounds through it.
Minimal silicone dry wax lube works best for me, wipe off any excess.
A silencer also makes a huge difference, I run a 9mm Uzi can with a thread adapter, runs great - sucks to cllean.

My kit runs best with 30rds per mag. I use frog lube lightly on everything and some grease on the wear surfaces.

I shot about 1000rds of CCI minimags. Since then I have been using minimags and win 555 with good luck.

I would try downloading the mags and keeping well lubed but not wet.

Stick with it, it may just need to wear in.

It took me about 2000 rounds and two replacement barrels to get mine running right. It generally runs good now. If I don't clean it and try to run it again, it'll jam about three times per mag. Even if I'm just shooting alot. I'll get through 4-8 mags with no issues. After that it just doesn't run well. I'm going to look mine over tonight to see if any of the above issues are going on in my gun.
