The Mask, The Sparrow: TX22s, FRTs and Rate Reducers
The Mask and The Sparrow are the most recommended suppressors for the TX22 I have seen on multiple forums. Here is the DL from a FRT and RR maker.
TX22s work with lots of different ammo. They work great with a FRT with lots of different ammo. They work great with a suppressor and lots of different ammo.
Then combining a FRT and suppressor on a TX22 gets problematic. The balance and rhythm are more critical. Even though the TX22 has a “fixed barrel” I would call it a “stationary” barrel because it’s not really fixed. There is movement and it does affect the reliability with a suppressed FRT in a TX22. Not always but most often, it needs more weight on the slide to function unless using a really light suppressor. But even then, a Rate Reducer or weight added to the slide can keep it running longer between the build-up of lead and suppressor cleaning.
Rate Reducers are dependent on balance of ammo, slide and suppressor weight. For Odd Mfg, we make a 1.4 oz RR. It works with 1200 + fps 40 grain ammo and suppressors under 7 oz. Every 1000 rds adds 1 oz of lead to a suppressor, more if the ammo is not plated. Cleaning lead out of suppressors to maintain the TX22 balance is a whole other discussion.
We do not recommend RRs without FRT and suppressor combo even though some people say different. Or research supports Taurus findings. Lighter slides and faster cycling has better reliability up to a point. Gen 1 slides have more weight so they were better for FRTs and suppressors, although not enough weight and options for adding wight to be completely reliable, but I don't think Taurus was testing FRTs.
The Sparrow and Mask are popular choices for the TX22 without a FRT. They are on the heavy side of 22 suppressors at 6-6.8 oz. With a FRT, more weight on the slide is needed. Our 1.4 or RR is not enough weight for the Mask. That combo requires 2.4 oz added to the slide and more frequent cleaning schedule. The way we do it is adding the 1.4 oz RR and a 1 oz optic. This drops the ROF to about 1750 RPM which is OK for reliability. On our graph of reliability, anything under 1700 RPM looses reliability.
Odd Mfg considered multiple designs for adjustable RRs in the beginning but one design philosophy won out, no moving parts or fasteners. Anything designed to come apart, will come apart, probably when least expected. We like K.I.S.S. principle.
What RR do you need? What ammo and suppressor do you want to use?
The Sparrow and Mask have been our favorite suppressors for most firearms of the past, especially the TX22 without a FRT. With a FRT, they are not the best choice for a suppressor. They are too heavy and require a heavy RR. In our testing the more weight that is added to the slide, the slower it runs, less the reliability, between extreme variations.
There is evidence that a +2 recoil rod assembly, suppressors, FRT and hyper velocity ammo can take the place of a RR. Unfortunately, the cost of CCI Stingers is 1/3 more that CCI MM 40 gr. The ROF of the +2 recoil rod assembly, CCI Stingers, FRT and suppressor is in the mid 2100 ROF which is close to the failure of the striker and magazine. Stinger ammo leads to more wear and breakage as seen by the broken frames and slides that pop up here and online with people who use hyper velocity ammo. We are thinking the CCI MM 40 gr combos at 1750 ROF leads us to believe that RRs are not going anywhere and probably a better choice wear control, cost and reliability.
We like the OCL Ti at 3.8oz. We can run a few thousand rounds with our RR before cleaning the suppressor. Best if cleaned every 1000 rds. Stainless steel and Ti material are easily and effortlessly cleaned with The Dip. The Dip is toxic, and needs precautions with use and disposal, is destructive to aluminum and carbon steel, but is cheap and easy with SS and Ti.
