I had jeff build 2 ARM's for me a couple years ago and thought the site had some pictures of his work, guess it changed. Example of the cuts on a SAR.

That's his site. Send him an email. Not sure why he doesn't have a more verbose site.

The lightening cuts are to remove extra metal from your receiver to keep the weight down. As you may have heard, the Galil is not exactly light weight, and shedding whatever ounces you can is a good idea.

good to know. in that case, make mine a micro with scope mount cut AND lightning cuts.

I'd like a true micro receiver. Depending on when this closes, 1-3 others, let me get it all figured out.

Hello all,
I am new to this forum. Have an APEX kit purchased before they ran out. What would be the appropriate recv type to use?
This group buy is perfect timing. :)
Thanks, kwthor

YES, you want in on this if you have Galil parts that need to be put together. Probably a standard or blank side is what you need .

What info do I need to provide? Are pics required?
I can get the kit out and go from there if needed.
I was advertised as "Galil SAR parts kit with original virgin barrel".

OR is this just something I should decide and build to a certain configuration?
Thanks for your help.

Kwthor, Glad to have you on board. I did buy a APEX kit as you did. Your kit is for a SAR configuration with the exception of the 18" barrel (SAR originally is 13"). The SAR is basically for SHORT ASSAULT RIFLE. there are three basic Galil configurations (excluding the Micro Galil).

ARM: Is ASSAULT RIFLE MACHINEGUN (it is simply a light machinegun for support fire)

AR: ASSAULT RIFLE (its a infantry rifle)

SAR: SHORT ASSAULT RIFLE ( the barrel is shortened for use as in vehicles or entering buildings)

Your best bet and cheapest will be to build your rifle into a SAR configuration. If you where to build a ARM or AR you would need to buy the extra parts to convert it to these configurations by buying the proper length pistons, gastubes and possibly the gasblocks.

Now which reciever to go with is up to your personal preferance and budget. I plan to build a South African R5 replica so my reciever will be flat on both side from CNCW so I can have the lightning cuts milled by the builder at a later time. Most Galils come with the cut out for mounting the scope hardware and that's how CNCW will usually sell them online. Say if you decide to go with the SAR then you want a reciever with the scope cut out and flat on the other side ( Although some true SAR's do have a lightnening cuts on the other side). There is plenty of info here on Galil Talk and we invite you to snoop around for more info about Galil's types. If you have any futher questions feel free to post. Lou

Here are some pictures of the different sizes of gastubles and pistons.

Thanks for the schooling on diff types.
Can I use the longer barrel (16" +) that came with the kit w/ the short gas system that also came w/ the kit?
Or do I need to look into the SBR route? Or another configuration?

Also, saw a reference to the IMI barrels having a 1/12 twist which might not be fast enough for heavier bolits.

Looking forward to this project.
Regards, kwthor

Kwthor,

That is a good question. I failed to ask that one myself when I bought my APEX kit. I recieved the US made 18" nitride barrel with the APEX SAR kit. APEX's barrel is really configured for a AR or ARM build based on the location cut for the gasblock . You can still use this barrel but you will need to have a gunsmith take more material off with a lathe, in order to get the correct position of gasblock. The gasblock needs to move further back on the barrel to work in the SAR configuration. I'm by no means knocking on APEX in any way because they had a heck of a price on Galil SAR parts kits!

I am no expert on the twist rates, so I encourage others to help on this. About all I know on twist is that I ask for them in my Gin & Tonic's :)

Here is some pics, Peace out! Lou

Just saw this thread or would have responded sooner.

Planning a R4 build, so please reserve One(1) receiver without the scope mount cuts.

Just have him email me when he wants payment.
I'll be happy to oblige.

Thank you.

Oso, they will take pro orders over the phone also. They took mine back in March but did not take any money because there was not enough requests for CNC to do a batch of recievers. Our hopes here is that we get enough buyers to secure a group buy sooner. Lou

So the pre-order has officially started then? I thought the website still had the 1st Gen preorder still up.

UPDATE 6/25:

OK, I talked to Denny today for at least 30 minutes and we have come up with some ideas / decisions.

*He just posted he pre-sale for the next upcoming batch of receivers on his website this past Saturday

*We discussed a group buy and he will honor it, but will know next week about how much to discount.Probably the same as the first wave (30.00 off final price when final payment is due)

* He wants everyone to go on-line and do your pre-order (putting a downpayment); I will provide a list to him of forum members to get the discount.

* He is making .223 scopecut receivers right now, then .308 scopemount cut receivers, then will make blanksided (no scopemount) receivers (.223/.308) and micro receivers last. Some of these receiver types will have will be limited on the quantities.

*The few of you having special serial number needs (special number/placement) will be done; but he does not want to do many.

* Again; he does not make lightning cuts! Contact Tenngalil for those.

* He is not setup to take micro orders now; but will be ready soon; My suggestion was for him to make at least 25-30 receivers.

(Our current list 6/25)
.223 w/scopemount cut:
Mr. Folgers (1) (The word Galil is not on any of the receiver(s))
Darth Golani (1)
Mujahideen (2)
Atarget1 (1)
Westcliffe01 (2)
Dee (1)
Daddy-O (1)
Oso-galil (1)
krinkfreak (1)
Crazywolf (1)

.223 receivers w/ no scopemount cut (blanksided):
Ruddiger (1)
Darth Golani (1)
lcastillo: (2)
firedog: (1)
Frankdude72: (1)

.308 receivers w/ scopemount cut:
* Mujahideen (2)

I will post the micro list next week after further discussion w/ Denny (Don't worry; he is making Micro receivers! This is why I'm doing all of this; to ensure he makes them)

Please respond when you have completed your order on line with them (deposit). Thanks
