Grey Ghost upper came in and won't fit. Started taking things apart and seeing what might be hitting. Bottom of the upper is hitting on the square block at the back of the lower (green circle).
Can I trim that to let the upper fit without impacting something else?

I realize I have a booger reweld. I've had to smooth out the upper weld on the inside when a Lage upper wasn't fitting. So I just wasn't sure what was right and wrong in my lower.

Do you have a Lage gas block installed?

It looks like there is extra weld at the top of the lower, under the corners of the hood.

When you try to slide the upper on, is there a space above the upper and under the hood of the lower?

It's really not that hard of a repair but the lower would need to be refinished.

I do have the Lage gas block installed. I took that out first to see if that's what was causing but it didn't change anything. I had just put it back in so I wouldn't lose the parts.

No space above the upper. But that led me down a rabbit hole.

The block that goes in to hold the stock wasn't all the way down. Turns out the booger welds on the back of the receiver were keeping the stock out slightly. Filed those down and stock went in further, letting the block sit all the way down.

So then the upper would go in and had space on top...going further back into the inside booger welds. Started the process of smoothing those down now. Whew.

On mine, the part that has the green circle sits crooked. On almost every upper that I have I have to file the lower corner on one side of the upper for it to fit. It is an easy quick fix.

Smart on you. If it were mine I'd send it to Sam to be brought into spec.

Always modify the cheapest part first

Interesting take. But I hate to live with bad parts just based on price tag. Booger welds are booger welds even if the paperwork associated with them is valuable.

I'm totally up for that. I didn't know anyone was doing anything like that. Sam at Practical Solutions?
