Good evening folks,

I've wondered if one were inclined to build a stamped receiver for a Galil, where would you purchase the flats - or which other AK variant flat would be compatible - and what differences would there be vs a milled version?

Valmet M76, if you don't mind spending $200-$300 per magazine, if you could find someone to part with one, or more. They're vey hard to come by, and most of the M76's you find, don't even come with a magazine.
Milled receivers are, of course, stronger, but a little heavier too.
You could go more AK-ish, with an Arsenal SLR-106, or a Zastava M-85, or Norinco, or Polytech AKM in 5,56, if you wanted to stay with 5.56. (Those Norinco and Polytech 5.56 mags are very expensive, and rare too.)
Southern Armament used to sell Galil flats. I don't know about their quality though.
You could also try a conversion of a one of those 5.56 AK's to make it look more "Galil-ish".
You'd have to dump the rear sight block, and fit the Galil gas tube, into the modified AK front trunnion.
I'd just go with the SLR-106, if I really wanted a stamped 5.56 Kalashnikov family weapon.
Stick with the Galil, there's no better AK family weapon.

The problem is the front trunion. I have found galil stamped receivers but I havent found anyone that sells a front trunion that would be compatible with the milled kit. Good luck. I'm going to keep an eye on this thread because I want to know too

There was an IDF Colonel in an episode of "tales of the gun" or "guns of the IDF" that had a custom built stamped underfolder Galil. It used standard Galil mags, Galil AR barrel, sights, front end with wood AR hand guard, AK gas tube and barrel trunion, with leaf sight removed, and Galil top cover with sights.

here's an interesting post on the subject.
You might have to cut and paste it.
It's a Norinco Hunter conversion.
I don't really like how it came out too much though, looks pretty rough.

Otherwise, you could get a demilled Galil receiver, and mill off the right amount from the sides, and bottom and rivet it into a 5.56 AK receiver, like the Nodak receiver.
Yes, I know the angle of the Galil receiver front is different, so you'll have to compensate for that.
You could do the same with the rear of the Galil receiver.
Nobody said it'd be easy, but it's possible.

So if I understand this correctly:

-This bloke went and took a Romanian flat and combined an AK74 front trunnion to the Galil barrel. As the angles differ he had the barrel and gas block "turned downwards"(?) And welded them back up? That doesn't seem prudent to me? Wouldn't that weaken the rifle in some way?

LM parts are the only locally produced ones I can source without importation. Needless to say AK 74 trunnions aren't the hardest things to get but I'd like to keep it local.

Stamped Galils have been done in the past, but as many have said they aren't exactly Galils because of this.

The problems come from mating the barrel, Gas tube and stock assembly to AK front/rear trunnions. At the end of the day, you are going to have to use more AK47/AK74 parts than Galil parts when doing a stamped build, so it more likely becomes an AK with a few Galil pieces added instead of a stamped-Galil.
