An acquaintance of mine just reported an unusual near catastrophic disaster with a Vulcan V10. He apparently loaded the weapon with a new mag, racked the slide and the first round failed to fire. Rather than dropping the mag, cycling the bolt a few times and then checking the chamber before reloading, he racked the bolt again and pulled the trigger. Apparently, this ignited the second cartridge sending shrapnel everywhere and pushing the first, still unfired round deeper into the chamber.

Aside from improper procedure used in clearing this malfunction, I am surprised the firing mechanism on a closed bolt gun would work if the bolt is a cartridge length away from being closed. Any theories?

if these are using the same hammer setup as the old Semi cobray guns it's very easy to do .

Only if there is something wrong in a major fashion. Hammer has two hooks. There is a primary and a secondary. Assuming his gun was a closed bolt (and all vulcans are in my experience) the only way I see this happening is a stuck fireing pin or possibly a round with a potruding primer that was somehow set off from the face of the bolt.

Vulcans, MPAs, and Cobrays are all pretty much the same design on the closed bolt semis. There are differences in things like Fireing pins and some extractors but the lower Fire Control Groups are pretty much the same. I would be interested on further details as this develops.

Yes they can fire out of battery slightly which is why they bump fire so well (even though I dont do it) but a full cartridge length is a hell out a big gap.

The old semi Cobray I had would drop the hammer anytime you pulled the trigger. no matter if the bolt was all the way forward or not. BUT i never had an issue like the OP stated.

If it fucks up, find out why.

#1 Reason why I dont like people touching my shit, almost every excuse I've ever been given is "I've only been trained on an M16" ,
THEN APPLY THE SAME PRINCIPLES.

There are lots of Vulcans out there that run perfectly fine. Yes, there are also some that have issues but the same can be said for SWD/FMJ/Leinad as well. MPA problems are pretty rare.
