I also wouldn't want to hump the gun and ammo around every time someone wanted to shoot it. I'm more than than happy with the machine guns I have. They get shot plenty and that's enough for me.

Thompson 1928....the gun ive wanted since i was 5 years old....the action is smooth as glass (at least the early ones are--ive touched a WH and could tell it was not close to the same)

also a Sterling l2a3....have one on order being made right now....after shooting one i was hooked....wanted one that night and got the ball rolling to get one made

i own 6 FA and soon to be 7....the Mac 10/45 is as much fun as any of them....expensive and exotic doesnt always = better.....with a vertical foregrip i can unload all 30 rounds at 15-20 yards and never miss once...its a dangerous MF after you get used to it....i enjoy a $6k mac as much as a $25k Thompson

I chose HK, out of the few MG's I own which is AK, Aug, Uzi I like the versatility of the HK sear. Followed closely is the Uzi as 2nd.

For versatility, the M16 can't be beaten. 22LR to 50BMG (yes, that one is a bolt action upper,but it's a freakin 50BMG out of an M16)
For those who want something different, the FG42 is a nice choice.
For blowing $hit up,a 20mm Gatling, (the GAU-8,IIRC)
For blowing big $hit up,a 40mm Bofors autocannon.
For blowing little $hit up, a 22LR M1919 (there's one for sale by John Thedford,IIRC)

Planning on finally getting my first machine gun in the next month or two if I find a decently priced one. This poll is extremely helpful!

subguns are much more fun...plus you can shoot them at indoor ranges.....M16 is over rated.....i can shoot more targets faster with a SA AR-15 than i can doing bursts with a M16...while with a more controllable subgun i can unload w/o missing....i would recommend you think about a Mac-10 or Mac-11 to start with...cheap/fun.....for the price of that M16a1 you can get 2 or 3 really fun subguns

i shot a HK a few months ago...i was expecting much more....i didnt really see why it was worth $35k...once again i get more fun from my Mac 10 than i do most of my other guns....with the Max 10/45 mk2 im just as accurate as i was with the HK.....

my latest few purchases are lower to mid priced guns now....i find a $6k-8k gun is as much fun as a $30,000 gun...maybe more

the Sterling is something i would also recommend....ive got one being made....shoot one once and you will want one

M16 + 9 mm (and/or .45 ACP, and/or .22 LR) upper (or .22 LR slide in conversion)+ magwell block (or modified/proprietary .45 ACP mags and/or .22 LR mags) = sub gun. In the last three years I've probably shot at least three times as many rounds of 9 mm, .45 ACP, and .22 LR ammo in an M16 as 5.56x45 ammo.

But that versatility comes at the premium price even though the M16 pattern MG is the most prolific transferable MG in the BATFE registry (at about 50K, with the Ingram/SWD MACs in second place at about 38K-40K).

This is actually a question I've been asked and I've wrestled with as I have an M16 and a HK registered Sear ... and couple weeks ago bought a transferable M11 with a original LAGE upper.

For the M16 I've got the CMMG PDW 22LR, a 8" AR57, a 300BO, a 7.62x39, a 10.5" Colt 9mm SMG, a Colt 11.5 Commando ... several uppers in 5.56/.223 including the 20" Colt LMG and Ares Defense Belt-Fed with the light 16 and heavy 12" barrel.

But the HK Registered sear has the MP5, MP5K, MP5SD, PTR51(308), PWS-52(7.62x39) and the 53(2.23) for host's ... I'd like to get a HK23E as a host (223 and the 308 conversion) but for the price I'll just get another MG

I'm guessing the M11 will get a few upgrades too ... after I get to bring it home.

I felt the same way when I SBR'd my MP5 ... It was anti-climatic. Then I got my sear a few years later and until then I didn't "get it" ... even now I like my 223 host better ... however the MP5K and SD rate up there with the 223 ... The MP5 takes a backseat to them.

The reason I went with the M16 first and the HK sear 2nd was for versatility ... AND the prices on them is climbing faster, they've more than doubled in the 5-6 years I've had them and there is no way I could justify buying one now. Of course the same can be said for the MAC platforms, it wasn't that long ago they were $2,500-$3500

So which are your favorite guns/hosts to shoot?
I'm about ready to get a M16A1 as my first MG... but I'm also considering a HK sear or a M60. I initially budged $25k... then $40k... and now $60k with another year of working overtime and saving money lol.

I really enjoy my MP5K and SD hosts ... but they are the newest additions!

If all things are equal I would just be looking for the best deal and jump into whichever you can afford comes along first; money in hand give you buying power. Machine Guns are a great investment no matter if you buy a safe queen or a shooter, they're all going up exponentially ... personally I look for a well cared for used gun so I can shoot it and it will still be nice enough that it will have re-sale value.

If I were to do it all again:

I'd get the HK sear first as they seem to be going up the quickest and have the smallest number available.

Next the M16 ... there are way more of these around than HK sears because you have not only Colt but other makers as well as conversions and RDIAS's

Last would be the M60 as it doesn't have any caliber conversion, it is what it is ... a pig and only configuration conversions ... and the M60 will also be the most expensive to feed ... don't get me wrong, I'd love to have one but it will have to wait until I win the lottery!

A couple guns to consider are the MAC10 and M11 ... company called LAGE is making uppers from 380 to 223 for them ... and they are getting great reviews and the platform gaining popularity because you can still get in for 7-10K ... in 2012 the average price on one was about $3500 ... I missed the boat on those! Same goes for an UZI registered receiver or registered bolt ... in 2012 they were around 6K for a bolt and 8 for a registered receiver; now they're 12-15 ... of course there are still Thompson's, Grease-Guns, Sten's and the like ... look on Sturm's and Bowers boards ... don't limit yourself to auction sites as there are 2 big MG dealers that jack the prices way up!

HK hosts are generally more expensive ... even an Omega barreled receiver (which I've had good luck with both of mine) are around $1,400 but you can also roll the dice and look at options like the Century 93, but other than that they aren't cheap.

The M16, furniture and uppers are much less expensive ... mine originally had a 20" barrel and triangle handguards ... but I immediately put a UBR stock and picked up a de-milled 11.5" 5.56 Commando kit for $700
Next I bought a 10.5" 9mm demilled kit that came with a 3-rnd burst trigger and everything else including mag block and 2 mags and correct buffer for $600(BTW you don't "have" to rivet the block into the mag-well, the Colt has tension pins that will hold it along with the mag catch) and I didn't have to dick around with it to get it to run because all the parts were designed to be used together ... again, complete parts kit.
Last year I picked up the Ares Defense Beltfed MCR upper is the most expensive at $4200 ... but what other 223 beltfed can you get into that cheap? NONE!
One of the most fun uppers is my CMMG PDW in 22LR with a 50 round drum ... its the cheapest to shoot and there is no recoil. If you don't run out of ammo you could write your name in full auto with it!
Finding some parts may take time ... I have an AR57 upper that started life with a 16" barrel and I was ready to dump it; then I found a FA bolt and I cut the barrel down to 8" because my suppressor fits inside the aluminum upper but if I don't want to shoot it suppressed I can use a 5.5" flash hider to extend past the handguard.

Really, it really boils down to what you want the most ... if its the M-60 then go for it first, however I think because of desirability prices on the HK sear and M16 are going up much faster than anything else ... I really thought prices had topped out when I bought mine, but just like the UZI and MAC10/M11, they've all more than doubled since then.

Be aware that not all M16's are created equal ... there are M16 conversions that are the least expensive but I've read they can be problematic if the "3rd hole" wasn't drilled exactly correct ... but if the price is right a competent SOT can fill and re-drill and refinish it.

There are also registered drop-in auto sears (RDIS) for AR's ... again, not all are created equal ... try to get one with a steel frame, I've read on-line the aluminum ones can wear and break. but I have no personal experience with them.

This helped tremendously!!! As much as I know I'd love owning and shooting a M60 and having it upgraded to a M60E6 configuration, I know for sure I'd also want to own a M16 and a HK MP5. The prices for HK sears and Colt M16A1s certainly keep going up at a faster rate than any other MG so I'm going to go for those 2 first. Going to take your advice and go for the HK sear first. Should have enough cash in hand in another month or so! I'll probably only start off with 1 host gun for the sear since I'll want to secure the M16A1. Leaning towards an Omega MP5 receiver for it.
