What's so great about 1911s?

My home/self defence load is the 185 grain COR-BON .45 auto +P. It has 480# of energy travelling at @ 1,100 fps. Absolutely nasty. Kicks pretty good for such a light bullet. It is the only factory made bullet I own. Everything else are reloads. My regular 1911 load for plinking is a 230 grain wheelweight lead bullet, Lee Tumble Lubed with 4.7 grains of Hodgdon Clays.

Iv owned the following 1911's and here is how i felt about them

first one i got was a brand new Colt Combat Commander series 80 in SS... it was just to heavy to conceal carry barrel was to short to get any accuracy out of it and after about 100rds without cleaning it would jam up .. i traded it for a 44 Desert eagle

Next was a 1980's Colt Govt model series 70 blued full size it was ok on the accuracy no way would i carry that beast concealed i mostly just used it for WWII Renacting shooting blank ammo. Traded it for a Russian SVT-40

then i got the Baby Para p.10 in SS when they first came out... thot it would be cool to have a baby 10 shot 1911.. ultra poor accuracy think it was heavyer then a full size 1911. traded it in for the Para P.14 witch was ok but the grip was made for the hulks hands was unhappy with it and sold it off

I got a Colt 1991A1 full size in on a trade this was probably the best 1911 iv owned it was super accurate and never jamed and worked great with blanks and i liked the Park finish and rubber grips it came with... sold it to my uncle i still get to shoot it from time to time

im a glock lover and iv owned atleast 4 Glock-21 45s over the years and they all really sucked for accuracy and recoil and the grips to big and iv owned 1 USP 45 i felt the same about it as i did the glock-21

honestly my favorite 45 ACP's are S&W model 4566 and 4506 or the SIG p220 and if i had to chose a mettle 9mm it would be the S&W mode 5906 or a Sig p226 hands down

If i was to buy another 45acp pistol i think i would like to try out that new FNP-45

I have a 1911 that I bought from a police auction for 250$. It's a colt government model made in 1964, it functions flawlessly. 1911's are made of steel, they're solid and built to last. They are pretty easy to strip and clean and they are an American classic. IMO they are very reliable, mine functions great on cheap reloads with cast bullets.The only time I have ever experienced a malfunction was when the gun wasn't lubricated, and or the slide wouldn't cycle because it was so gummed up from dust and powder residue. They are sexy looking guns, can't say the same for Glocks... Yuck!

I have owned many of them over the years and still do. Great guns.

But I will take a Browning Hi Power over a 1911 anyday of the week.... from a shooting, funcitionality and dissasembly perspective any day of the week. I dont care if its a .45 or not.

2nd., The Colt 1911 is the #1 Hand-Gun that has Killed More Damn Japs & Germans than any other handgun around.
From 3 1/2" up to the 5" original, It has been Used to win every Gun Game in town by many shooters and it's trigger can be made glass smooth, it's Slim for Concealed Carry, and It Launches and Huge Piece of Lead with Authority!
By the way,Yes I carry a 5" 1911A1, ALWAYS !

They are too heavy for ccw. The lw Commander is about it for size and wt, and I prefer the lw Defender, actually. Until a ducktail grip safety is fitted and the bottom rear of the triggerguard "sinused" and a speed lever is added to the thumb saftey, they are uncomfortable to grip and fire. Once that work is done, however, they are really, really nice. I've owned scores of them over the years, smithed most of them myself, won some matches, did well in others, but if I had to pay $1000 for one and could get 5 Star BM 9m's for the same $1000, I'd take the Stars. I can normally find a Spld Commander type with all the bells and whistles for $550 or so, tho. If I have to do all the work, I want a less than $400 price tag on one. I have no use at all for the full size and wt version any more.

The biggest advantage is the all steel 1911 can handle +P+ loads. Most of the lite weight Glocks and similar firearms warranty and manual don't recommend +P+ loads, because they will break under the pressure...!

If you think a regular 1911 is heavy and has a horrible magazine capacity, try the GSG 1911 in .22 ...

At least the regular 1911 will put someone down for good.

hmmm the polymer framed and steel reinforced hk usp45 and usp45c handles +P+ loads too... i'm aware of a tuperware piece that's shot over 160000 rds, so the magic can't be just in the steel frame; it has got to be the touch of jmb that makes the 1911 so special.

I have owned 6 or more 1911s throughout the 25+ years of being into guns. The 1911 is a legend, and can be a great thing, and everyone should own at least one in their lifetime.

That being said....my Glock 21:

1. Is less expensive.
2. Hold more rounds with a flush fitting mag, and with an extended mag.
3. Has less precieved recoil (not that a 1911 is harsh)
4. Is way more reliable with all style of bullets compared to any 1911 in the same price range.
5. For me, is dead nuts accurate at ranges out to 25 yards.

I haven't owned a 1911 for quite some time, still think they are great, especially when you show them to your friends.

I think that unless you buy a used one "right", from a private seller, and sell them the same way, you can lose a ton of $ on them, especially if you can't smith them yourself. You'll be hard pressed to get $800 for some of those $2000 marvels, if you ever need the $.

My Uncle served 2 tours in Each War & "Vollunteered as a "Tunnel Rat" to kill them "Little Bastards" as he put it. He Used his Colt .45 up close a few times.
Didn't discuss it much, but when he did, he would tell you everything.
The 1911A1 is one of the Best Self Defense Firearms made, and most likely "The Best" platform for many match guns made to date. Granted, the Military ones were made for Battle, so tightening them up makes a big difference.

Here ya go little Fella. Full size 5". In the Shower or Sleeping is the only time I don't wear it. I also carry a Straight Razor and a Pocket Knife.
