Where do you think all those original H&R Reising 20rd mags are....???

I understand a bunch of PDs and Prisons have (had) 100s of the Reisings. Do you think 100s of mags might have gone in the trash can after the Reisings were sold.....? Or, could the mags still be locked away in PD vaults? Maybe even forgotten in a few US Government warehouses.................

Your thoughts,

A few months ago I was surfing e-bay and found 3- 20 rndrs. for sale $75.00 each buy it now. I bought 2 and kick myself for not getting the third one. They run like a charm and were in slightly scuffed new condition. The third one sold for auction for $113.00 They are out there but very hard to find at a good price.

There were a lot of mags to go along with all those Reisings, but since there were limited quantities and the Reising itself was discontinued it didn't take long for the supply to dry up.

I love the Reising, but I think the biggest oversight on the designer's part (well, in terms of modern collectors anyhow) was not having the Reising accept Thompson mags. I mean, really, if the Reising was intended to be the Thompson's main competition (and it was intended to be just that), why not also design the weapon so the competition's mags work with it?

If you've not yet got yer paws on any of the Christie 30-rounders, you should think about getting some soon. The ones I have are definitely high-quality and they've worked flawlessly for me... and they're only around $80 a pop. :)

Cheers,

Reising Mags

While looking thru an old MGN for some old info I wanted to review (from 1991) I found a small spot about a company (that before the ban) was converting Thompson drums with 20rd reising mags as feed towers. I am sure production was limited and I have never seen one other than pics in the article. Still, it could be done again.

Just last year the fellows over at Stony Creek Armory (http://www.stonycreekarmory.com/) were talking about building drums for the Reising... not sure if they were altering Thompson drums somehow, or if they were going to be making new ones entirely... but they were also trying to scrounge up a bunch of old Reising mags to use for the towers. Last I heard they were going to get in touch with Ken Christie (shortly after Ken started making the 30-rounders again) to see about getting a bunch of mag bodies from him to use since they'd be cheaper than the surplus 12 and 20 rounders.

I just sent them another e-mail to see if they're still working on those drums... I'll post the response if/when I get it. :)

Cheers,

Greg, I too e-mailed Stoney Creek a while back. They did e-mail me back and said it was not a top priority project, but may be done in the future.
Now maybe if around 200 reising owners would e-mail them, they would move reising drums up in their priorities!:jester

I just saw a post over on Subguns saying that Kahr was going to start producing the big Thompson C-drums again. That might give this idea the nudge it needs to become reality. The bad part is the high cost of the Kahr drums.

Here's the e-mail I got back from Stony Creek this morning:

hello, sorry that plan has been put on the back burner for awhile. we have all the plans but no time. maybe in the future.

So, it looks like they have all the info they need for these Reising drums, but they've not got the business need to move along with the project. Probably too many AR, MAC, and AK types out there screaming for more drum mags. ;) :)

Cheers,

I found a table at Knob Creek this weekend with a dozen or so original 20-round mags for $80 each. They are not the recent repoductions, either. Overall they look pretty good.

Troy at BarrelXchange had a .45 drum, I put a deposit down on one with a GG tower. He said if you could supply a Resing mag for a tower it could be mated to his drum.
As for the SCA drums, I had one of the .45 drums on order (never got it), and got one of their 9mm drums, after 2 trips back I cancelled and got my money back.
FWIW, the later M3 and M3A1's did not use the Thompson mags either, I don't know if that was a design oversight (being that there were thousands of Thompson mags already in the military's supply system), or that the designers wanted to sell the gov't more mags. Either way it's proven to be a boon to us today, because there are alot of cheap, quality mags out there for us to use!

Reising Mags

When I bought my minty Model 50 back in 1977, my dealer had Reising mags for $6.00/each. Probably could have bought all he had for $5.00/ each. By the way, my M50 #601 was from the New Hampshire State Police, came with a nice Fed Labs hardcase, and sold with 4-20 rd mags for $250.00!!! Wish I had bought 100 of them now. That May 1986 cutoff law sure raised transferable gun prices. Back then a nice Colt 1921 Thompson was about $3000. Going to unload it when prices for nice Reisings hit $10,000, which may not take much longer. Can't believe that next month is the 20th anniversary of the 1986 cutoff of new transferable full autos.....Reisings are great guns IMHO.
