Murrica, where else.
I've never seen the need personally. I get plenty of traction with factory or replacement grips and honestly I don't like the aesthetics of most stippling. I put it into the "to each their own" category.

Front of the grip would help on most grips. It would look and stay better then the guys putting skateboard tape on their guns for added grip.

Can you post a pic.

I texture wooden grips that I make (quicker than checkering) but when I was competing I wore neoprene palmed gloves,so it wasn't an issue.

magpul and GI M16 grip

The Magpul is done with wagon wheel stipple, I call it Samurai pattern.
On the GI grip is very aggressive grip call tree bark.

What did you use?
I have used various metal tools for wood grips. Nail Setting tools make an interesting look.

There's a video on YouTube of a guy using a wood burning tool to stipple a Glock. Looks neat, but he said his first few didn't look so great.

I like stippling. Practice on something you don't care so much about. Uzi grips are hard to stipple!

Around here, it seems like every other vendor at all the gun shows has at least one M16a2 stock for sale.
Large, with both flat and rounded surfaces.

I don't stiple very often, but I will on very smooth surfaces sometimes.

I have used a dremel to stiple a wood stock on a youth shotgun to make it easier to hold. And I have used a soldering iron to stiple plastic grip on my scorpion. Just FWIW, the front of the scorpion receiver magwell is very difficult to stiple and is very heat resistant plastic, but it can be done.

The scorpion?

It's black. Doesn't feel like bakelite either.

But it is very heat resistant. Whatever it is.
